Well, he did it! We have an official candidate in next year's presidential election. Ed Clark is the Libertarian Party candidate for President of the United States in the 1980 election. As I mentioned a column or so ago, Ed ran for governor of California in 1978 and polled almost 400,000 votes. That's more than his party's candidate in the 1976 presidential race got in the whole U.S. So maybe we can look forward to a real third party in the years ahead.

Dick Watt has been writing again. This time he's written a history of the independent Poland which existed between the two World Wars. From the review in the New York Times, it sounds like a fascinating account of a floundering government that had little chance of lasting. But then it did give us a pope, didn't it? I wonder if Dick has covered that aspect.

In Boston, Paul Black has been named director of the Hubert H. Humphrey Cancer Research Center at Boston University School of Medicine. He will also chair the department of microbiology. Paul served as an associate professor at Harvard Medical School and an associate physician at Massachusetts General Hospital prior to his new appointment. He is the author of more than 160 medical articles. He lives with his family in Lexington, Mass.

Bill Montgomery, my best source of news, reported that he had a nice evening after the Holy Cross game and that among those present were Jim Streng and his wife Mary Jo, all the way from Sacramento, Calif. It was the first time back in Hanover for Jim since he left us after his sophomore year. Most of the intervening years have been spent in Sacramento in the construction business. Bill also mentioned that the ski weekend in Franconia at HarryGoldsmith's lodge is already over-booked, so those of you who procrastinated will have to wait till next year.

You will be pleased to know that our class is solvent. From the latest report from Treasurer Steve Parkhurst, I discover we have over ten grand in the till. Does that make you feel any better about the economy? No? Well, we do our best!
