The other day as I took my favorite walk around the campus and beyond, I was struck by something that bothered me when I looked across the campus from Main Street to Dartmouth mouth Row. The four buildings with their green shutters, small-paned windows, and unadorned lines form one of the most beautiful and well- proportioned units that I know of. Resting on a slight knoll gives them even more preeminence. The effect is somewhat spoiled by the growth of some maple trees which, beautiful and shapely as they are, have become so thick with leaves that they make large splotches against the white buildings and break up the architectural unity of the whole group. Some more delicately- leaved trees would be more appropriate. We all do, of course, miss the great old elms around the campus, and wishing will not bring them back, sad to say! Perhaps this is a case of nostalgia, but what is wrong with that? It does not diminish our love for the College.

How about a bit of class news? Here goes! While Phil Evans was waiting for service in a Cape Cod barber shop, he started a conversa- tion with a younger man next to him and dis- covered that he was none other than the nephew of our own Chan Steiger. This younger Steiger has a summer home only four blocks from Phil's place. That is one way to keep up communications!

A similar situation took place at Alumni College this August. Helen Brooks and MaryMcCulloch were attending the college and found themselves talking with John Hill, the son of our deceased classmate John Hill, once a Maine lawyer. Helen and Mary enjoyed Alumni College very much in spite of the heavy schedule and side events. A great experience, they said.

Marian Hill, the widow of our late Lee Hill, sent a copy of a beautiful tribute to Lee for his exceptional services in the field of medicine. This has been turned over to the editor of the Dartmouth Medical School Journal. Marian hopes to come to Hanover next June to see her grandson Lee Carson graduate from Dartmouth and hopes to meet some of us' 17ers. She will be most welcome.

Blanche Bean writes: "It was so very nice of you to let me know the results of the Dartmouth Alumni Fund for the Class of 1917. Harold loved and was very dedicated to Dartmouth. I am getting along fine doing what needs to be done. I will continue to stay in our home as long as possible. Of course I do miss Harold so much as he was such a vibrant person and his presence was always felt and the last seven years we were constantly together." We wish Blanche the best.

Howard Myers, still a very busy arbitrator in Beverly Hills, Calif., makes this suggestion to your class secretary-treasurer: "You ought to take a trip like I did. I took the S.S. Rotterdam 75-day cruise aro,und the world last January. It was terrific. This coming January I plan a 45- day cruise to Australia on the Royal VikingStar." How we all wish we could! Howard adds, "On August 15 I celebrated my 85th birthday. Gee whiz. I am not getting old. I am old." So are we all, drat it!
