Five '28 members of the famous championship team of 1925 were honored in Hanover over the Harvard game weekend when Dartmouth celebrated its 100th year of football. They were Myles Lane, Al Fusonie, John Phillips, Jack McAvoy, and Red Fauntleroy.Phillips, Jack McAvoy, and Red Fauntleroy.
Friday night, October 17, was Dartmouth Night, and a feature of the annual parade around the campus was a flatbed truck with chairs for the ten members of the '25 team, plus the men from the other five undefeated Big Green football teams. The parade, of course, ended in front of Dartmouth Hall, and after speeches, music, and cheering, the bonfire was lit. The honored players and wives were guests of the College at a buffet dinner at Hopkins Center.
After the game Saturday (which, for the record, Dartmouth won) everyone changed into dry clothes and was a guest at a reception and centennial banquet at Hopkins Center. All agreed it was a memorable event.
Red and Penny Fauntleroy flew up from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., for the weekend. Al Fusonie flew from Pompano Beach, Fla., and was met by his son Doug '58, a physician in Greenfield, Mass., who went to the game with him. The stadium was jam-packed, so it was difficult to get a list of'28ers, but seen were Lane and BettyDwinell, G. I. and Marion Davis, Jack and FranKenerson, Red and Fonty Sanborn, George andLib Holbrook, Milt and Peggy Hoefle, JoeTidd.
George Klein asked us to draw your attention to the fact that President Kemeny will speak at the February 11 meeting of the Dartmouth Club of Sarasota and that the members are planning on alumni coming from a large area. George said, "Sure would like to see a whopping '28 turnout." The rapidly growing Sarasota Club sponsors luncheons the second and fourth Tuesdays at the Crown Restaurant. Write George if you'd like to get your name on their mailing list for special outings, and mention how long you'll be in the area. His address is 1365 Harbor Drive, Sarasota 33579.
On November 10 Jack and Fran Kenerson are flying from Boston to Tampa for a golfing holiday and then north to Pinehurst for a week.
Larry and Naomi Martin are leaving in December for New Smyrna Beach, Fla., and won't return to New London, N.H., until May. Larry said Feet Thurston just got out of the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital in Massachusetts a week ago and is getting along fine.
I called Jack Rose at his apartment in La Jolla, Calif., to wish him a happy 75th birthday. You'll remember he had a severe stroke last Christmas, so he has had to curtail his voluminous correspondence. He answered his phone and said he was swamped with cards so his sister and a friend were opening them for him. He spoke of his continued concern about Dartmouth affairs and when he spoke with enthusiasm in favor of specific improvements, I was relieved ... he still has what it takes!
Jerry Sass says he and Rachel are just back from two weeks in Hawaii to attend medical meetings; they go there twice a year. Jerry says he likes the new Dartmouth Review and has sent a couple of checks to help it get started. He suggests that '28ers will find it interesting.
Mac MacEachran and Esther enjoyed the Dartmouth Horizons program in Hanover September 27-29. They saw their son John '70 who just started as a physician in family practice in Peterborough, N.H., after completing his residency at the Mary Hitchcock hospital. Mac and Esther will go to Scottsdale, Ariz., in February, as they have done for several years.
Jack and Peg Zellers had to cancel their plans to attend the William and Mary game in Virginia because of problems Peg was having with arthritis. They are going to Hanover November 10 so Peg can go to the Clinic for a second opinion. Their daughter Margee has carved out a very successful career writing books, newspaper articles, etc., about the Caribbean. She writes the annual Fielding's Caribbean, all 820 pages of it, based upon her personal travels there since 1956, when she graduated from Connecticut College like her mother and sister before her. She has written several successful books about the inns of Switzerland. Also, BritRail commissioned her to write a pamphlet for them called "BritRail's Best of Britain." I've read it and recommend it to you potential travelers. Jack and Peg have a grandson who is a senior at Yale. (Jack tried, but the boy's father is Yale '52.)
