Ah, the winter(?) of 1980.
At the time of this writing, Connecticut had not received any measurable snow in 1980. My wife and I were in Hanover over the weekend and observed the heelers building the Winter Carnival sculpture with snow that had to be made on the Green. At the Dartmouth Co-op they couldn't give the skis away. It is hard to imagine New England without snow. Especially if your income depends on it. Let us hope that by the time this issue of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE reaches its readers, New England will have been blessed with plenty of the much-cursed but indispensable white stuff.
While I'm on the subject of Hanover, I cannot fail to mention our reunion. It is scheduled for June 13-15, and from the notes which BobHittle has received on dues slips, it appears that many '75s are planning to make it. The more in attendance the better, as Jeff Little has a great time planned.
Before going to the news for this month, I must mention the Alumni Fund. As we all know, the College depends on the Alumni Fund, and reunion class giving is the lifeblood of the fund. Please consider a substantial increase in your gift for this, our initial reunion year.
Now for the news! Jim Tyre "came out of hiding" recently to report on his whereabouts. He has been an attorney for a year and is with a firm in Century City, Calif. His primary area is business litigation "with some first amendment/freedom of the press cases as a little variety." Andy Gait (wherever you are) and Dave Stephens, please note that Jim wishes to relay a message to you about the exact identity of "Wilbur T. Gnorf."
Jeff Sassorossi and his wife Bev are in upstate New York, where Jeff is assistant director of admissions for Siena College. Prior to taking the position with Siena, Jeff had been employed by Mutual of New York in New York City and Syracuse. In the spring of 1977 he began to at tend Syracuse University at night in order to obtain a master's in higher/post-secondary education administration. The following year he left MONY to pursue the degree on a full- time basis and in May of last year he was awarded the degree. Sass wrote about his job at Siena: "It certainly is nice to be able to get up in the morning and actually look forward to going to work." Amen!
Wedding news this month includes that of Mike Marlette, who was married in December in Rye, N.Y., to Martha Burns. Martha attended Skidmore College and Cooper Union and graduated from the Katherine Gibbs School in New York. At last report she was planning to join the Nichols School in Buffalo last month as a secretary. Mike has been with Banco Real, S.A., in New York and recently joined the Marlette Plating Company in Buffalo.
Tom Sims was married last year to Patricia Moorman in Miami. Bob Doe was one of Tom's groomsmen. (Tom was one of Bob's the year before.) Following his graduation from Wharton with an M.B.A. in health care administration, Tom has been working for Booz, Allen, and Hamilton as a health care consultant in their Atlanta office. Pat received a degree in elementary education in 1978 from the University of Miami and is teaching fourth grade in Dallas, Ga.
Laura Gordon has been the film consultant to the Aspen Institute for Humanistic Studies since early 1978. She wrote that her projects will be coming to an end soon and she suspected she would find herself on the West Coast in the near future. Bob Jamieson graduated from the School of Design at Harvard in January 1979. He wrote: "Master of architecture in hand, I'm seeking my fortune in San Diego, the land of milk and honey. I have a challenging position at Dale Maigle, AIA, in La Jolla. The best fringe benefit is body surfing during lunch hour."
Chris McConnell got tired of the "blood and sweat and fumes of running a chemical plant" and decided it was time for a change. Soon thereafter, Dow transferred him to Moorestown, N.J., as a sales representative for ion exchange resins and heat-transfer fluids. Chris, be sure to bring a lot of them to Hanover in June to sell to your classmates during the reunion. What a great market!
Shorts: Bob Sullivan has left New HampshireProfiles magazine to join the Sports Illustrated staff in New York. Jim Moriarty is "alive and kicking in beautiful Swaziland!" (Not Switzerland - Swaziland!) And this from Roger Clarkson: "I know Jeff Little is planning a helluva fifth reunion. He has called me several times at 3:00 a.m. to tell me his ideas. DaveHunt stopped in last weekend. He is making big bucks and working his tail off. He left me a deposit and said, 'find me a tax shelter.' P.S. He's an attorney. As for me, how can I sell real estate when Mike Sandoe at the bank is charging my customers 15 percent?" Aw, c'mon Mike.
Thanks to all who wrote. Don't forget the Alumni Fund and the reunion. Two very good causes.
