Rabbi William Leffler's memorial address for our 34 deceased classmates given at our 30th reunion dinner was so moving, I thought it would be most appropriate to paraphrase it here for the benefit of all our classmates who were unable to attend that summer evening.
He began by saying, "In the midst of enjoying our reunion, we need to pause and relfect on the passage of the years, that over three decades we have lost 34 classmates out of 640 who entered Dartmouth with us, that these were men with whom we spent four years as undergraduates. Some were friends, others merely acquaintances. But our lives were bound together during the idyllic years in Hanover with hopes and dreams and anticipations. Since that time we have each gone our own way, in the business or professional world, with families and new friends yet those years are a part of who and what we are now, and these men were a part of those years."
He concluded his remarks by touching on the blessing of friendship and noting that true friendship does not fade, despite the span of time or years.
He then gave a short prayer and slowly and quietly recited the name of each departed classmate as follows: Ulrich G.G. Adami, Robert E. Blume, John.J. Boardman, Robert A. Bowler, Roger A. Bradley, Emerson Carey, Bruce N. Carson, Charles W. Collins Jr., Robert L. Coon, James W. Cornman, Stuart T. Daniels, Theodore F. Eberle, Thomas O. Flack, Theodore A. Guinan Jr., Tilbert R. Gyorgy, Charles O. Hoban, Paul A. Hodgdon, John H. Hodgson, William K. Krauss, John O. Lounsberry, Harry L. McCaffrey, John S. McQuade Jr., Edward D. Powers, James W. Rabe, Colin L. Raubeson, Richard H. Rogers, William T. Sawyer, David C. Stuart, Robert L. Tyler Jr., Franklin D. Von Heimburg, William T. Weis, Charles B. Whitlock, Julius R. Wolf, Wayne S. Young.
It was very still that beautiful moonlit June evening by the side of Occum Pond behind the DOC House, as each person there must have quietly reflected on his relationships with these departed friends.
May they forever rest in peace and their memory be eternally treasured in each of us.
