In a variety of honorable and honor-filled pursuits, members of the class of 1943 continue to show the way as leaders. Con Young, president of United of Omaha, the principal life insurance affiliate of Mutual of Omaha, has just been elected to the Mutual of Omaha board of directors. As indicated in the photo in this issue, Con-along with two other Dartmouth graduates-is also a member of the board of governors of the National Association of Securities Dealers.
Bow Bowman, president and chief executive officer of C. R. Gibson Company, a highly successful Connecticut publishing firm, was recently honored upon his completion of 40 years of services with the company. As indicated at the dinner in his honor, Bob has been president or chairman of "just about every charity and benevolent organization in the area." He recently completed service as president of the Connecticut Expenditure Council.
Bill Porter has just completed seven years on the Borough Council of Upper Saddle River, N.J., having been the council's most recent president. He also served as acting mayor on occasion. A borough publication, hailing him for "many valuable contributions," had this to say about Bill:
"Favorite pastimes are skiing and duck hunting. Bill and his wife Barbara have two grown children and three grandchildren. Bill heads a marine cleaning business with offices in Hoboken and Norfolk. His avocation is real estate; he owns leisure property on Fire Island, N. Y., as well as a condo in Florida. Bill plans to retire in the near future and the Porters will make their home at a farmhouse in Virginia which they have been refurbishing recently."
John Cook, of San Antonio, represented Dartmouth at the 100th anniversary academic convocation of Incarnate Word College in San Antonio.
We spoke with Jim Gillfallen recently and learned the sad news that his wife Betty had passed away on Christmas Eve, after a long and valiant struggle with illness. The class extends its deepest sympathies to Jim. Jim continues with his work in biochemistry at Merck and Company.
We also regretfully report the deaths of BobGarvie on December 12, 1980, and Don Walls on September 20, 1980. Obituaries will appear in this or a future issue.
While in Chicago, we talked with happily transplanted New Yorker Bill Zeitung, vice president and senior creative director of Marsteller Inc. advertising firm. His work recently took him around the globe in connection with a television commercial.
We also talked with Fred and Polly Lent. We should all have a "retirement" like Fred's. Winter months find him busy in his own consulting enterprise assisting small and mediumsized companies to fix whatever ails them sales, production, inventory control, office administration, etc. Beginning in May, he will switch for the warmer months to his orchard in Pentwater, Mich. The Lent peaches and sweet and sour cherries were a market success last year and Farmer Fred looks forward to more of the same in 1981 after a skiing trip to the Rockies this spring.
