I am confident that every member of the class of 1954 is absolutely bursting with pride that classmate Dave McLaughlin will be leading Dartmouth as its 14th president. I know each of us would like to be present in Hanover on June 28 when Dave is officially inaugurated on the first Sunday of the summer session. As a class and as friends, we wish him every, success in this exciting new phase of his life.
For those of you who like to plan ahead, put these two important dates in your calendar pad: There will be two big Dartmouth Nights honor- ing Dave this coming fall. For those of you in New England, a big dinner dance will be held at the Sheraton Boston on Friday night October 16 (the night before the Harvard game). For the New York area, the grand ballroom of the Grand Regency Hyatt has been reserved for a big Dartmouth dinner on Tuesday, December 1. It is understood that the class of 1954 will take the class attendance cup at both of these Dartmouth Nights.
Teddy bear aficionados can rejoice. Classmate Alan Bialosky and his charming wife Peggy have just published a big hit called the Teddy Bear Catalog. The Bialosky's are pet and wildlife editors for the Cleveland PlainDealer and are avid bear collectors themselves. The book is profusely illustrated and tells the history of teddy bears, gives prices one can expect to pay for old or modern bears, and cites sources for particular types of bears. It even tells how to repair or wash an elderly teddy. Check your local bookstore for this good reading material. Alan is actually a printer by trade, but now is about to earn his law degree which he has been toiling with for the last three years. Alan and Peggy appeared on N.B.C.'s "Today" show recently and the Teddy BearCatalog got neat reviews in the New York Times in January.
Another note from Colonel Bob McCartney disclosed that he and his family love Omaha and are looking forward to the winter sports season which is upon them. Bob's job keeps him bouncing back and forth between Nebraska and the Pentagon (his job is developing and selecting nuclear targets in the event of a major war). He reports that he misses the Big Green campus during the crisp fall football season they experience out there.
F. Dean Hildebrandt, Jr. has been appointed vice president in the executive department at the Travelers Insurance Companies in Hartford, Conn. He has written many articles in various business and professional publications. Dean lives at 21 Outlook drive in Darien, Conn.
We were pleased to note that the First National Bank of Minneapolis has elected Dewalt H. Ankeny to the position of chairman. Pete lives with his family in Wayzata, Minn., and has two sons at Dartmouth. We enjoyed seeing a note from Lori Miller who reported the following about Don Miller's activities. "Don is putting in a 16-hour day as headmaster of the Pennington School in Pennington, N.J. We had a fire in our main building in January that destroyed the administrative offices and a number of classrooms and science labs, but school resumed two days later . . . thanks to Don's determination and much good help from the faculty and the local community. We are now rebuilding. Enrollment is at capacity and we love it here. We have two sons: The older (Jeff) is in diving school in California and Brian is a junior here at Pennington School." Lori is a registered nurse and working on her sociology degree at Trenton State. Needless to say, the Millers are keeping busy.
My southern New England correspondant, Fred Alpert, passed along the following article that appeared in The Providence JournalBulletin: "A group of local yachtsmen, calling itself the Courageous Foundation, has begun a fund-raising effort to purchase the two-time America's Cup defender Courageous from owner Ted Turner and use her as a steppingstone toward a new 12-meter yacht for the 1983 America's Cup campaign. Involved with the new foundation are Dr. Anthony Migliaccio of Barrington, founder of the Rhode Island 12 Association (now the Rhode Island International Sailing Association). ..." We hope that Tony's boat syndicate will pay off handsome returns in the 1983 races.
Speaking of sailing, Dave Fitch is the newly elected commodore for the New England Lightning class. Dave and his family race their boat through the entire New England circuit and were in the nationals in Delaware. The America's Cup races this fall provided much entertainment for the Fitches. They watched the finals from a Coast Guard cutter.
Word has reached us that Joe Smutnik passed away on January 3. An obituary will appear in this or a subsequent issue of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE.
