Our first visit to the Sun Belt did not require a decision as to the merits of East and West but rather a comparison of two Worlds, Disney and Sea, Mickey vs. Shanu. We enjoyed both during a week's stay in Orlando in April, and after a visit to Winter Park, we can understand why Sylvia and John Tiedtke have chosen central Florida for their home. We missed seeing John but had a pleasant visit with daughter Tina, who welcomed us to the Morse Gallery, which houses a delightful Tiffany exhibit, and at Rollins College we admired the John M. Tiedtke tennis courts and the famous shell museum.
Lee Chilcote has made a rapid recovery from open heart surgery. He and Kay, together with Tootie and Brownie Neff, were leaving Fort Lauderdale in April for a trip to Europe. Frances McGrath, widow of Norman, has moved from New Mexico to 59 Hilltop Place, New London, N.H., which will make it much easier for her to attend 1930 gatherings. TedWolf confirms his ascendancy in super-senior tennis, 36th nationally and second in Virginia. Lari and Charlie Widmayer, with son Martin, who is in engineering school at the University of New Hampshire, are off to Europe for three weeks in late May.
Class Officers Weekend is always a unifying event, and our May meeting was especially significant because it was sort of a dress rehearsal for the change in the office of president which will occur on June 28. John Kemeny restated his devotion to Dartmouth, his admiration for the diversity and excellence of the students, and his belief that Dave McLaughlin '54 was the right man for the job. Dave in turn paid tribute to the successes of the Kemeny years and pledged complete commitment to the educational and financial needs of Dartmouth. Our class was represented by Ev Low, MiltMclnnes (who was named News Letter Editor of The Year), Harry Condon, John French, and Charlie Widmayer. Les Godwin was also in town attending an Athletic Council meeting. Everyone of this group is planning to attend the Sanders' mini-reunion in Candia on August 29. Although you will not be reading this until after the middle of June, there will still be time to advise Herm of your intentions.
On April 12, the fifth 1930 Fellow visited Hanover. Maria de Loudres Pintassilgo has been at the center of Portugal's emergence from dictatorial rule, first as secretary of state and social security, then as minister of social welfare, and finally as prime minister. She has been a forceful voice in support of women's rights in Portugal's struggle for democratization.
"Have a nice vacation" isn't quite as appropriate a salutation as it was in 1928, so I'll substitute therefor, "Have a healthful summer."
