Holly and I put the icing on a glorious summer by spending the first ten days of August under sail off the coast of Maine. Our hosts aboard the 33-foot sloop La Vita were John and Pokey Kornet. One has difficulty imagining more delightful shipmates or more accomplished "ragtime sailors." For one who usually languishes painfully during the hot months here in the Pennsylvania Dutch country, it was a joy I won't soon forget to get Down East for a few days, in the company of good friends.

I hope the summer had similar moments for all of you.

Happily, I have a little more to write about this month than I did last spring, thanks in large measure to various press agents, public relations firms, and interested members of other classes.

Ned Gillette and partner Jan Reynolds were in Peking (China, that is) in mid-June, after completing their circumambulation of Mount Everest (see the '67 class notes in the May issue of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE). They were featured in a June 12 article datelined Peking, written by Christopher S. Wren '57 of the New York Times staff. The Rutland, Vt., Daily Herald picked up the story on June 14. Osmun ("Os") Skinner '28 was kind enough to forward me a copy, too.

"In the mountains of today," Ned is quoted as saying, "style is everything. You can't climb unclimbed peaks any more, and you can't explore unexplored country. This is a new way of looking at an old subject."

From a rather ancient release which only recently crossed my desk, I learned that DaveMangelsdorff was awarded the "Meritorious Civilian Service Medal" for his medical analysis work in the directorate of combat developments and health care studies at Fort Sam Houston, Tex. Robert H. Buker, brigadier general and commandant of the Academy of Health Sciences of the U.S. Army, decorated Dave for his service between 1974 and 1981.

Another news release makes known the fact that David W. Rice has been elected a vice president of EG&G Sealol Inc. of Providence, R.I. The company manufactures mechanical seals and hydromechanical devices. David is a certified public accountant and holds a master's in business administration degree from the Sloan School of Management at M.I.T. He was previously with Arthur Young and Company in San Francisco.

Frederick von Pechmann has joined the Hartford, Conn., office of Arthur Young Executive Resource Consultants, providing advice on the recruitment and selection of corporate directors and senior executives. He came to the Young organization from Heublein's international group in.Farmington, Conn., where he was a vice president. Fred received his M.B.A. from the Tuck School.

Anthony Blecher has been named vice president of finance and chief financial officer of the Langer Biomechanics Group Inc. In his new position, he will be in charge of raising capital, strengthening financial controls, streamlining cash management, and coordinating financial planning for the company's home and overseas offices. Langer is the world's largest producer of custom orthotic devices.

William Bronner has been named a group counsel for NL Industries Inc., a New Yorkbased worldwide manufacturer and supplier of petroleum services and equipment. He joined the company in 1978 after having served as assistant U.S. attorney for the southern district of New York. He has also chaired the New York State Bar Association's environmental section committee on natural resources and is a member of the Federal Bar Council and the Council of New York Law Associates.

Robert Thurer and Edward Evans have been elected to fellowship in the American College of Cardiology. Bob is a graduate of Harvard Medical School and currently an instructor in surgery there. He is also a cardiothoracic surgeon at the Beth Israel Hospital in Boston. Ed is a graduate of the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry and is now practicing medicine in Oceanside, Calif.

I took a stab at mailing out postcards again at the end ofjuly, to see if I could rustle up a little news. The results were ridiculous, but I'll report 'em anyway:

One anonymous respondent (who I believe is Dave Sicher, but don't hold me to it) writes: "I am happily working hard in New York as a vice president of Salomon Brothers. Two children Mark, age 12, and Karen, age ten, are at camp this summer 20 miles from Hanover. I had a great time visiting them and the campus and staying with John Schumacher, his wife Pat, and daughter Lauren who live in Etna, N.H."

(I hasten to add that my comment above is not intended to imply that the above note was "ridiculous." The above note, in fact, was great and most welcome even though unsigned. The only other reply I received from anyone was an anonymous "Hi." Very friendly but not very helpful . . . )

Also, it seems I have the wrong mailing addresses for Steve Hanley, Leigh Hall, and John Hager. Where are you guys?

That's about the size of it for now. Welcome back to September, school days, and the active season. If you get inspired, drop me a line.
