In recognition of the Magazine's 75th Anniversary, we have included two pictorial spreads- one on the Editorial Succession (which might well be called "the Hopkins Succession ) and the second featuring representative covers from the past. (What went on between the covers of the muagazine is the SUbject of articleS in thiS issue by Charlie Widmayer and She by Grantham.) Trying to pick nine out of more than 700 is something of an impossible task; one comes away with an even stronger sense that the place itself is no small part of the College's heritage. As a rule, we have tried to reproduce those that reflect the graphic changes which have taken place on the cover in 75 years as well as those that suggest what this magazine is all about. For whether the emphasis is on people, ideas or the place, the covers of the DARTMOUTH ALUMNI MAGAZINE have always made oblique (if not direct) reference to the educational mission of the College.
One of the first things Charlie Widmayer and I talked about last spring was his aversion to reprinring items which had appeared elsewhere. I concurred, but make an exception for e Starting Point (below), which appeared in this magazine on the occasion of its 50th birthday and is as relevant today as it was then.
