The quality of Big Green football playing, watching, and wagering greatly improved after Dartmouth returned to the Ivy League in mid-October. On a bright, warm, and windy afternoon near Harvard Square, the Crimson were well handled. Before the game, there was a large group of tail-gaters that included Fred and Thelma Stephens and their children Nancy and David; John and Jane SpringerDick Fleming; Don Bigham; John and AnnAlger; Ted and Sheila Rockwell; Dick andConnie Giesser; Smiley and Ginger Schoder;John and Jeanne Home; all of the Gene Gabianelli crew; Paul and Marilyn Paganucci;Bob Callender; Dick and Jane Lombard; Eliot and Elaine Robinson with their son, daughter, and grandson; Mayo and JulieJohnson; Jack and Lu Morris; Chuck Reilly;Tom and Irma Napoleon; and Bernie andJoan Sudikoff and their daughters Julie and Suzanne. Our adopted classmate Nick Hagoort was a little somber after the game, but was already talking about next year.

The following weekend was Dartmouth Night. After the bonfire, we had a couple of tables for dinner at the Hanover Inn, but an even larger crowd in the Tavern until last calls. At the Saturday morning Norwich Inn class meeting, Bob Simpson reviewed completion of our gift to the College: "A Recreational Guide to the Dartmouth Area." It is really well done. A big "Wah-Hoo-Wah" to Put Blodgett, Chuck Luker, and all those who made it possible. Bernie Sudikoff reviewed, in depth, plans for reunion. He and his committee have really organized a super event. More on that later. The Big Green devastated the Big Red at Memorial Stadium. After the game, many of the undergraduate sons and daughters of '53 joined a great '53-'54-'55 cocktail party and dinner-dance at the Sheraton.

And then, it was on to the Yale Bowl and a come-from-behind, well-deserved victory over the Blues. The Lena team had a big day: Rich '83 and Mike '84 on the field; Dick and Jean at home afterwards. Joining the celebration were Seth Carpenter, Al Collins, MartyDeGennaro, Burt Dorsett, Stretch Graeve,Tommy Hartshorn, Fred Hitt, Dick Joslin,Karl McGhee, Dick McCostis, Joe Pardee,Bob Simpson, Don Smith, Don Williams,Jack Zimmerman, and John Springer.

More accolades for our super effort in the recent Alumni Fund campaign. Ron Lazar was presented the Alumni Fund Committee Award in recognition of extraordinary service to Dartmouth College as head class agent. The class was given the John H. Davis Trophy, presented to Ron, Tom Bloomer, ChuckLuker, and Bernie Sudikoff in recognition of achieving the largest dollar total in a nonreunion year $191,012.

Jim Decker represented the College at the inaugural ceremony of James B. Edwards as president of the Medical University of South Carolina in October.

Bob Derzon has been elected vice chairman of the board of trustees of the recently-incor- porated DartmouthHitchcock Medical Center. It is an alliance of the Dartmouth Medical School, the Hitchcock Clinic, Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital, and the Veterans Administration Hospital in White River. Bob was the first administrator of the Health Care Financing Administration of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare, and he is a former director of the hospitals and clinics of the University of California in San Francisco. He is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences and is currently a member of the governing council. Presently Bob is vice president of Lewis and Associates, a Washington, D.C., health care consulting firm.

George Orwell first wrote about it. Ted Kennedy aspired to it. John Glenn and Fritz Mondale have been working toward it. George McGovern and Harold Stassen have come back for it: 1984. And the highlight of 1984 will be Monday, June 11, to Thursday, June 14! Our 30th reunion! Bruce Sherman reports an overwhelming response to the postcard inquiry. There is a long list of those definitely planning to come. For instance, Tom Dewey has accepted the Chuck Luker challenge and is in serious training for the swim meet. Reunion is going to be a great event, complete with seminars, outdoor activities, sports, friendship, and warmth. Please make plans to be there.
