As the days get longer, the skiing seems to get better. It's been a vintage year for everybody except the High Sierra crowd. Tom and Isabel Dewey visited their old stomping grounds around Walnut Creek, Calif., over Christmas, but the mountains were too green for any sliding.

Such was not the case for Bill Gilges. Last year we wrote about the annual Flatland Race held in Vail for all of the ski clubs from Kansas City, Omaha, and the rest of the Prairie. I just happened to be in Vail this year on the big weekend and I never saw so many people with racing bibs - over 1,000. Everybody knows Bill because he was one of the founders of the race and remains one of the more successful competitors. Once again, he led Kansas City to victory over the other ten clubs.

Emil Frohlich dropped a note from South Carolina that he is back in the saddle at the family business - a feat that apparently requires more dexterity and toughness than Kissinger's "detente" or Teddy Roosevelt's "big stick." Anybody who's ever been connected with small family business will second that comment.

Bert Melcher writes that we were well represented at the Annual Christmas Cocktail Party of the Dartmouth Association of the Great Divine. Bill Chafee has abandoned the Big Apple for a very challenging and responsible position in charge of Urban Design for the Denver Regional Transportation District which is authorized to develop a major fixed-guideway transit system. (In addition to having good transportation, the RTD has great graphics: all of the busses were emblazoned "The Ride.") Ed Grant has been previously reported as retired from the Navy and is with the Electron Corporation, which is the largest foundry in the Rockies.

A Wah-Who-Wah to Phil and Helga Fast on the birth of their son Geoffrey Phillip January 15.

Eliot Robinson reports "two for two, and out." His daughter, Pamela, has been accepted on early decision for the Class of '80. Son Doug, is Class of '79.

Audrey and Dick Loewenthal took their family for a culture jaunt to Mexico City and the Yucatan Peninsula over Christmas. Lots of sight-seeing, ruin climbing, sunshine, and warmth. And I'm sure a little tennis also.

Speaking of warmth, John and Helen Rice are well adjusted to living in Houston and have all but forgotten those Minnesota winters. They see Kelley McBride, Skip Adams, and Chuck Noll.

Dick and Margot Ledbetter are safe and sound in Arlington, Va. In May, after more than 12 years in Laos, they had to leave rather hurriedly. Unfortunately, everything they owned was left behind. Life on the 14th floor of a condominium is quite a change from the ranch style life in Laos, but they're getting used to it. Dick works with the Federal Highway Administration in Washington, and is finding his new job in the Program Management Division quite satisfying. Their oldest daughter was married this summer. Their younger daughter is a sophomore at the University of Southern Colorado in Pueblo. The other two girls are away at school and the three-year old boy keeps everybody busy at home.

Nan and Al Collins are alive and well in West Hartford, Conn. Al continues to survive the onslaught of denim by serving up good flannels and woolens from his men's clothing store. Their oldest daughter is a freshman at Bates and is on the varsity ski team.

Dick Dunham dropped us a note over Christmas and he's still travelling all over the world with his involvement in international amateur sports. Naturally, this is a big year, but Dick promises a detailed letter.

Dave Picker was named to the new position of president of the motion picture division of Paramount Pictures Corp. That's now a unit of the diversified industrial and financial concern. Gulf & Western Company. Dave had been with United Artists and lately, an independent producer.
