Last month we all received a beautiful brochure from Dartmouth's Bequests and Trusts Program. This is a subject many of us should be considering. However, my angle is to ask if any of you noticed that the fresh faced director of the DU Glee Club of old pictured in the flyer was none other than St. Paul attorney Leon Goodrich, and singing mightily in the front row is U.S. District Court Judge Tom Jackson. The "Way We Were"!
Wives are so wonderful. Last month my daughter sent out 100 information requests to classmates. To date five have been returned for wrong addresses and one (1) came back filled out. It was from a wife! Whoever called this bunch the "silent generation" wasn't kidding. Rise up from your beds of slough, men of '58; turn off the TV; put down that second martini; and open up your mind for a moment. Be assured there are other classmates interested in knowing you are still alive.

The March 1984 issue of INC., the "magazine for growing companies," featured classmate Frank Sands. His climb by acquisition and descent by divestiture is told in "floury" prose. Ascendant again, Frank is pictured placidly sitting by a Vermont lake pondering yet another quality product for King Arthur "Flour.

Head agent Sam Smith has made it official. Our class contributed $193,736 to the Alumni Fund. Just as significant, 486 classmates supported Dartmouth College. Wonderful job, Sam! The supporting team included many agents, as you know. Organizing and motivating those agents were Dick Jacob, eastern region; Dave Badger, western region; FrankSands, participation; Don Voss, matching gifts; Peter Williamson, special gifts; PhilStoddard, physicians; and Otto Wagenbach, fraternities. I wish we had space to name every agent who called, solicited, wrote, and followed up.
By the time you read this, the November election will be history. Allen Ertel should be applauded in his campaign for Pennsylvania attorney general for placing emphasis on the need to combat the drug problem in his state and especially in the schools.
Finally, how can we adequately commend the U.S. ambassador to Lebanon, ReginaldBartholomew, for his example of courage, fortitude, and professionalism. Literally blown from his office, his face covered with new wounds from the bomb blast, Ambassador Bartholomew displayed the finest traits in the American character in his demeanor, unshakable calm, and intelligence. Whatever one's politics or philosophy, the actions of this member of our class in a difficult crisis, when the lives of his wife and children were threatened, can always be regarded as a standard against which the performance of others can be judged. "Around the girdled earth they roam ..."
