The picture of Bob Sullivan reproduced below for your interest and edification graced the "Letter from the Publisher" column in the February 7 issue of Sports Illustrated. Stardom at last! That's Sully, all right, feet up on a cluttered desk in a messy office that looks remarkably similar to his Dartmouth dorm room. He's on the telephone, interviewing Bjorn Borg or some duck hunter in Wisconsin. The letter from the publisher tells of Sully's stint on special projects at SI, covering stories about cocaine in the N.F.L., acid rain, murder in jaialai, and fitness in high schools.
Sully's sports activities at Dartmouth are also noted (tennis team and golfing in the Chi Phi Open given the status of Heorot these days I suppose we shouldn't talk about that tournament any more). In addition, there is mention of his master's degree in journalism from B.U., his stint as a tennis instructor in Franconia, N.H., and his tenure as managing editor at New Hampshire Profiles magazine. He's been at SI since 1980. This guy has been to the beach!
I also just happened to receive a letter from the above-mentioned media star. Sully recapped the holiday social season in New York, which was highlighted by a big bash at his Soho loft. Merrymakers included Art Beaver ("bells on his toes and ringing in his ears"), Bob McKernan and Bobby MacAllister from the class of '74, Brooks Clark '78, and Lisa Twyman '79. "On a recent trip through Chicago, I dropped in on Joe and Mrs. Hooter (Alison) Yastrow for econo-burgers and beers at a local haunt. They're both well and living in Highland Park. Dan Magee was married to Jenny Sheetz recently in Altoona, Pa. Dan just finished G.W. business school in Washington. The Magees will live near Altoona. Deebs is no better at beer pong, and I handled him easily on his wedding eve." (Could it have been that he had something else on his mind, Sully?)
"Victor Zonana made it in from San Francisco with an awesome road trip. Brian Crush met his plane at Boston the night before the wedding, and they-pulled into Altoona at 8:00 a.m. the next morning." Thanks for the letter, Sully. How about providing those details on Kid Vaeth and his nuptials? I did receive an invitation to the marriage of Bruce Stuart '74 and Cathy Stein in Calgary, Alberta, at the end of April. Congrats, Stuey. I've got to meet this Cathy.
Richard and Robin Pechter sent a note from Norfolk, Va., to say that Rick is completing his residency in internal medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical Center in Norfolk and will be doing a cardiology fellowship at Texas Tech University Medical Center in Lubbock, Tex. Robin is president of the Eastern Virginia Graduate School of Medicine Housestaff Auxiliary. The Pechters are busy raising their twin sons (one year old last February) and running comic book and baseball card trade show conventions in Tidewater.
I received a note a short while ago from Nancy and Bill Aydelott '72, who have their own film production company in Marblehead, Mass. I met Nancy (Vassar 74) at a Stanford publishing course last July; Bill arrived at the end of the course just in time to join Nancy, my wife Barbara, and me for margaritas, mariachi music, and munchies beneath the eucalyptus trees on the lovely Stanford campus. The Aydelotts were previously best known for their work on The Return of the Secaucus Seven, but last fall this talented couple won three major awards for television commercials promoting WBZ in Boston. They won an award for the best promotional spot at the International Film and Television Festival of New York for their "Maynard in the Morning" promo, the New England chapter's Emmy Award for "Outstanding Commercial Announcement," and an award at the U.S. Television Commercial Festival in Chicago in the station promotion category. They've attended so many award dinners that Bill has had to put elbow patches on his tuxedo jacket. And business is so good that Nancy now uses an 1.8.M. personal computer for the managing and marketing of their thriving firm. Can an Oscar be far behind? We think not.
Bob Sullivan '75, a special projects editor at Sports Illustrated, found himself adorning the"Letter from the Publisher" column in a recent issue of SI. The photograph accompanied anexposition of Sullivan's recent activities, expounded upon in the 1975 class notes column.
