As Gomer Pyle used to say, "Surprise, surprise." Chicago is preparing for its first real mayoral election in 50 years following the defeat of Jane Byrne in a relatively clean primary, in which only 3,400 incidents of vote fraud were reported. Of course, one or two incidents may have gone undetected while Republican poll-watchers were outside checking on why their cars were suddenly doing an excellent imitation of a Dartmouth Night bonfire. A surprise of only slightly less size is that I've got plenty to report and that I may actually get this thing in before my deadline.

Going through my accumulated postal units (mail), most of which are disconcertingly marked "Occupant," I find that Rick Hill has been named an officer at Continental Bank in the U.S. banking department. Rick is assigned to Continental's Seattle office, with responsibility for customers in Idaho and Washington. No potato, volcano, or rain jokes, please.

The alumni office was kind enough to send along an excerpt from The Boston Herald. American which noted that Reggie Williams was named 1982 Man of the Year on the Cincinnati Bengals pro football team. The award goes to the top citizen-athlete on each N.F.L. team. Congratulations.

Also in the sports world, Tim Caldwell has returned to full-time Nordic ski-racing after taking a year off to teach history at Vermont Academy. Tim won the 1981 American Berkebeiner at Telemark, a race that I get winded just reading about. At the end of the 1981—82 World Cup season, Tim finished in 28th place despite missing four races and experiencing problems like frozen eyelids from cold and wind chill on downhill portions of the course at the nationals. Continued good luck in what is an extremely demanding sport, Tim.

Moving into something that is more than speed, I find that David E. Howe has joined the law firm of Baker, Miller, Mills and Murray in Dallas.

Meanwhile, that renowned purveyor of pertinent passings, The Valley News, reports that Dennis Albaugh, a geologist by trade, has been working with BCI Geonetics out of Laconia, N.H., and Grand Junction, Colo., trying to find a potable water supply for Enfield. BCI specializes in groundwater searches by employing a science known as fractured rock hydrology. I'm sure BCI could find some clients on Webster Avenue badly in need of water on certain weekend mornings.

On the ever-active offspring front, DickHoffmann reports that he and his wife Linda welcomed Courtney Elizabeth into the world on July 31, 1982. Dick recently saw former roommate Ethan Weiner, who was in Los Angeles for his brother's wedding. Ethan and his wife Diana had a daughter, Debra Lynn, in November, as did another of Dick's roommates, Ken Wright, and his wife Barbara in Minneapolis, also in November. Locally, Kingand Hope Stevens Poor recently had a baby daughter, Meakin Ames, who, contrary to the rumors being spread around by area sicko JeffHillebrand, was not born with either hornrimmed glasses or a women's crew sweatshirt. Before this takes on the proportions of Winds.of War I'll stow away my remaining hot items till next month. So, until we meet again campers, keep those cards and letters coming May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. And all that other good stuff. Happy trails.

A gathering of four friends last summer under sunny skies at Stone Harbor, N.J., included, from, left to right, Mike Martin '75, John Sheldon '74, John Pruitt '74, and Tom Ames '74, plus according to Sheldon's sister, who sent in the picture "Bonno the Wonder Dog."
