The following has come to me from Everettt Wood '38 of Ketchum, Idaho. It is so well done, complimentary, and appropriate at this time that I am sharing it with you all: Sun Valley, Idaho February 21, 1983 Dear Mr. Dodge: Of course alumni are proud of their class and classmates. And yet it's their bond with the entire college that remains their greatest pride of all.

In this sense do I (Dartmouth '38) send you a few words and the enclosed pictures of your classmate Carl Gray, whom I've seen a lot of around Sun Valley during the past two years.

As a former president of the Sun Valley Ski Club, and patron of many local skiing events, Carl is an honored figure around this famous resort. But it is as an active skier himself that he's really astonished us all.

As a handsome and vigorous 82-year-old, Carl (a) competes in cross-country races over six kilometers and (b) skis downhill (on "Baldy," the big mountain around here) in up to a foot and a half of powder snow. A tremendous achievement from any point of view. But in Carl's case he's been doing so the past seven years on two artificial hips! Which is both fantastic and something of a record, I am sure.

Clearly, Carl is an inspiration to other skiers in Sun Valley, be they aged 80, 70, 50, 30, or 20.

I wish to add that he skis both cross-country and downhill in the company of his charming wife "Happy," who is very much at home herself on skis - despite the soft accent she retains from her native South Carolina.

In a word the class of '38 (which counts among its classmates four national ski champions) salutes Carl and "Happy" Gray, and all members of the gallant class of 1923! Sincerely, Everett Wood

A recent letter from the son of Richard Montague to Howard P. Emerson says that his mother has recently died. In his letter, son Dick thanks Howard for his memorial contribution to his father, recalling the travels Howard and his father made throughout Europe. One summer when Howard was teaching at Roberts College in Turkey, he and Dick joined forces to travel through the Balkans interviewing various government heads. Howard recalls in particular a well-received book written by Dick called Oceans, Poles, and Airmen. He knew all of the early American and foreign flyers and referred to that period of aviation as the "Age of Innocence." How we have changed it!

Glad to hear from Fran Hennessy that the former Joan Haubrich is now Mrs. Francis Desmond, 272 North Farm Drive, Bristol, R.I 02806. Fran mentions, however, that the Desmonds are going to be moving to the Wilmington, Del., area. She is not sure when. We shall advise the College of where she now is staying and hope the forwarding process will catch up with them.

Final reminder: Our 60th reunion is upon us June 13-15. Hope you'll be there!

Octogenarian Carl Gray '23 is shown skiing the deep powder at Sun Valley, Idaho, with twoartificial hips in this March 1982 photograph. More on Gray's skiing exploits is in the 1923 classnotes column.
