On Sunday, April 17, there was a segment on 60 Minutes regarding a controversial matter within the F.B.I. One of the bureau's veteran agents was caught shoplifting while serving in an undercover role, was prosecuted, and was subsequently fired by the F.B.I. There are deeper factors leading up to this which CBS's Morley Safer unraveled for us as he interviewed amongst others, Roger Young, who assists the head of the bureau, William Webster. Although more accustomed to asking questions than to giving answers, Roger calmly and impressively fielded them all.
Bill Hudson has returned to Massachusetts after a hiatus of a couple of decades. His new position is manager of the South Shore Plaza in Braintree, Mass., located south of Boston on that high-tech highway, Route 128. Bill is temporarily living in Duxbury with relatives while his wife Joan, a school teacher, finishes up her work in Pennsylvania.
Check out the copy of this invitation which recently appeared in my mailbox: "L/RBM, IV/ IX/LXXXIII, II III V-VI VII VIII IX, Cock- tails at VI p.m., XXXVI River Street." Well, the come-on and the incentive to play the game of the perpetrator was "cocktails," so I ad- dressed the puzzle. The clue was RBM the initials of my roommate in New Hampshire Hall (Richard Mount) and the invitation was to his 50th birthday party.
Now, what is it about 50th birthdays? In Naugatuck, Conn., the local newspaper (at least a bogus edition thereof) devoted its entire front page to Aaron Simon on the day he hit the half-century mark. The spread included pictures of him as a baby, in the Army, and even on his wedding day.
And I have been deluged with phone calls, letters, and pleas from your relatives for the past several months asking that I join with classmates in wishing you happy 50th birthday. Mine was last year. No big deal. There are more coming really.
This is my last column until the fall, and the last chance to encourage you to attend our unique, three-class mini-reunion in October for Dartmouth Night. It will be a full weekend of activities, including a Cornell football game. Enjoy being with those who will be celebrating their 30th reunions with us in June 1984!
