John Shanahan reports that his kids "always manage to keep the thrill in parenting." His son Michael, who had been attending the University of Denver, eloped last summer. "Our wacko is now residing with his spouse in Chicago and enrolled at Loyola University there. Why anyone would trade those two more years in Denver for Chicago is beyond me. We all went out after New Year's to meet Tricia's three older brothers/spouses/kids, and they threw a belated reception party that was very nice and a lot of fun."
And news from John Lombardo "another" (self-professed) "crazy '7l" ("Though 'round the girdled earth they roam...) in kyiv Ukraine: After a low draft number tour in the U.S. Army Infantry, marriage (Patricia, U. of Wisconsin, journalism/consumer affairs), graduate degrees in psychology/organizational behavior and business administration, and 20 years in business in human resources and organizational development, we decided to give a gift of service to the people of Ukraine as they learn to adapt to a more open market system after being closed off from the west for 70 years. As a business advisor/Peace Corps volunteer, I am helping to bring training and resources to beginning entrepreneurs and small-business owners. Still struggling with the Russian and Ukrainian languages and this fascinating culture, I look forward to returning to the business world back in the United States in time to celebrate the turn of the century. Pat is holding down the fort for us in Wisconsin as she leads the consumer affairs effort at Sargento Foods Inc.
"Where is Dave Paradise and his facility with Russian when I need him? Celeste and Steve Tyson have been our steady friends, and they sent me a wonderful 'care package' for Christmas complete with a Dartmouth sweatshirt. Wishing peace and every happiness to all of our fellow '71s as we continue to actively explore, and perhaps a bit affect, our world."
Nels Armstrong joined President Greedman last winter in Washington, D.C., where he was being honored at the Finnish embassy by the local alumni club. "The gathering could have been considered a '71 mini-reunion!! Peter Pratt was joined by Gene Elrod, Holly TaggertJoseph, Steve Muller (I just saw him in London a few months ago!), Rick Paris and family, Garrett Rasmussen, and me. We were happy to have Patricia and Patrick Granfield (widow and son of classmate Richard Granfield) with us as well."
Malcolm Jones and wife Karen, a partner at Sibson & Cos. (a management consulting firm), "are finally leaving our apartment in L.A. behind and will be living fulltime in our home in Sonoma County. We will tele-commute, travel for business, and work several days a month in our respective L.A. offices, though we'll be staying in hotels. Classmates who have visited 'The Roundhouse' include Rich Harvey, WillisNewton (with whom we share SF symphony tickets), and Doug Jones. Last fall I joined Gene Elrod at a Redskins Monday night game against Dallas, and we had a ball. Now that I'm in northern California fulltime I hope to see Dick Wenzel more often. My work at Sun America as director of institutional marketing continues to be a source of pleasure. Since my territory runs from Minneapolis south through Chicago, on to Dallas plus everything west of that line, I do travel a lot and try to see classmates when I can. Karen and I recently were in Ecuador, where we climbed Cotopaxi, a 19,500-foot volcano. Great time. A sad note: My father Malcolm Sr. '26, Tu'27, recently passed away after 93 wonderful, healthy, and happy years. He attended his 70th Reunion the same year I was in Hanover for our 25th. He enjoyed his years at Dartmouth, his life-long friendships with classmates, and the fact that there will always be a Malcolm Jones '26 scholar on campus."
Peace.
