Hello, cooler weather. I am glad to have you back. Summer may have been filled with sun and good times, but without an air conditioner my summer was filled with unadulterated, stifling heat. Enough about my problems. Let's get to the business at hand. My first bit of newsworthy information comes from New York. (That's odd.)
Sit right back and you'll hear a tale of the cruise up Hudson Bay (River). Thirty-five '83s set sail one morn' for a fun-filled and exciting day...
Yes, folks, Bobby Goldman and Kelly Fowler took time out from their busy schedules to plan the '83 Booze Cruise. On August 11, 35 of our classmates took the Day Liner to Bear Mountain State Park. The day looked as if it were going to be another rainy and cloudy Saturday. However, when the motley crew began their voyage, the sun peeked through the clouds and the dreary morning blossomed into a beautiful day.
While on Bear Mountain, the group enjoyed hiking, boating, and softball, but mostly they enjoyed eating and drinking and talking about their Dartmouth days and early career experiences. On the other hand, there were those like Jim Maguire and Neal Donnenfeld who found it much more profitable to discuss stocks and bonds. At least these guys know how to relax.
Bobby (Scoop) Goldman took it upon himself to gather information about the trip. According to his sources, Ray Patterson spent his summer studying Latin during his break from Yale Divinity School. It was also revealed that Maureen Kane has started law school at the University of Chicago; Tory Rodgers has purchased a scalpel and headed for medical school at the University of Vermont; and Donna Freeman was accepted to the pre-medical program at Columbia.
By the way, Donna wanted her friends to know that she has a surprise for 1985, and only Aida Gonzalez knows the untold story. But not to fear, folks, Aida has promised to spill everything if I bring a nice present to her housewarming party. Any suggestions?
Back to the high seas. Denise Cloutier and Susane Brubaker were among the happy sailors, and they report that they are roommates and living in Hartford, Conn., "helping each other keep their sanity."
Last, but not least, there were lovebirds among the voyagers. Charlie Morrison was present with his new wife Nancy. Jim Bloomer brought his fiancee and Gail Wiedman talked about being in love, but did not volunteer any of the details.
In summary, the Booze Cruise was a success, and afterwards 15 party animals left ship to "terrorize the Charles." However, they realized that they were still in New York and settled for a party at Beef Steak Charlie's.
Believe it or not, the world does not revolve around New York City, and people have actually written to me from other places. From Atlanta, Teresa Wiltz writes to say that she is living in New York and vacationing at home. She finds New York confusing: She thought a studio apartment had a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and separate area to practice dance. (Silly girl!) Shanta Sullivan, also in Atlanta, called and exclaimed that she is working in public relations but is very excited about the possibility of getting a position in advertising in New York.
From Massachusetts, Grace Jepson was exuberant in announcing her engagement to Mike Bressia (Purdue '83). The happy couple will exchange vows in November. Who says long-distance relationships don't survive? Grace is marrying her "HTH" of many years. Also, in New England, Kate Rugen has continued to show her expertise on the court as she and doubles partner Dan McCormick captured the mixed-doubles championships of Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts. This news comes via Kate's proud uncle, Carl Rugen '33.
By the way: Grace Jepson would like to say hello to Susan Thorton ... Kim Selmore has a new Celica and has made Washington, D.C., her new stomping ground ... BillCossaboom has been spotted in one of New York's airports and doesn't want me to mention his name ... I have also had a request to find Justin Rudelson.
Finally, I would like to mention that last summer Sheila (Sweeney) Bond and Alan Bond were married, and I was fortunate enough to attend the gala affair. The wedding was truly beautiful, and the reception would have made the Carringtons wish they had received an invitation. Congratulations to all the newlyweds even though I received only one invitation this year. The mail system just can't be trusted.
Before I sign off, I would like to thank Bobby Goldman and encourage everyone to pick up a pen and write me soon. If you don't have anything to write about, then have a mini-reunion and get some '83s together. The class treasury will help you fund it that is, if you have contributed by paying your class dues, which are more than due at this point. Take care Wilbert.
