"Pike" Emory has been awarded the "Herbert E. Gregory Medal for Distinguished Service to Pacific Science." Pike has received numerous awards in 63 years of prominence as a Pacific anthropologist, but the Gregory Medal and its presentation at the 15th Pacific Science Congress in Dunedin, New Zealand, are especially significant. Dr. Gregory hired Pike as assistant ethnologist in 1920. The next day the first Pacific Science Congress convened in Honolulu and Pike attended as a delegate. Since his appointment by Gregory in 1920, Pike has remained with the Bishop Museum in Honolulu and has been a prominent force in building its reputation both locally and internationally.

Steve Graves writes A1 Frey: "Geraldine and I just returned from a 'delayed honeymoon' trip in our camper. We visited Canada and criss-crossed New England, visiting many relatives and friends while enjoying the colorful foliage." Also to Al, Bob Farwell writes: "I received a letter recently from Robert Brace '52 advising that I was to receive a gift for 60 contributions to the Alumni Fund. The gift arrived, a pewter bowl with the Dartmouth seal on one side and my name on the other. At age 87 I thought my days of thrills were over." From Larry Lovejoy to Al: "Even once a year is better than never. Too many faces leaving our picture lately. Hang in there."

Charlie Sargent writes Al: "Have had a poor summer most of it until mid-September. Hit 85 on June 17 but still right on the ball 'in most ways.' Would like to have been in Hanover to see the Princeton game, but no soap. Too bad we cannot issue a 'Smoke Signal' like Jigger Merrill '19, my war buddy, does. Frankly I am disappointed in the limited field of action shown' by 1920." And from TedMarden: "Everything is OK with me, best to you, Al, and the rest of 1920."

Joel Portugal '58, Alumni Fund chairman, calls attention to the fact that this is the ,70th year of the Alumni Fund and that last year the fund failed to meet its goal. This must not happen again, so get your donation or pledge in now and, if possible, increase it over last year's.

LOOKING BACK to March 1924: NateWhiteside is the chief solicitor of the city sales department of the American Bank Note Company. Laddie Myers was not present. I am glad to say he is feeling much better and will soon be among us once more. He established a new indoor world's record of 12 feet, ten inches. (!)
