From the nationally-televised debate with the Democratic candidates to personal computers, Dartmouth has been in the news. The "debate at Dartmouth" brought the nation's eyes and ears to Hanover for several hours. Perhaps the spirit of the campus is contagious but, in my view, it was one of the few highlights in a seemingly endless campaign.
Dartmouth also continues to blaze new trails in this age of the computer. Perhaps this is only natural in light of the rich legacy of John Kemeny and the Kiewit Center. The College is now embarking on a program which will ultimately make available to each student a personal computer at a greatly reduced cost. The goal of Dartmouth is an undergraduate body which is 100 percent computer literate. As an "illiterate" alumnus, I applaud the program and the goal.
I'm writing this column in a crowded Boston restaurant and none other than DiggerDonahue just stopped over to say hello. He's begging for some ink, so I have to oblige. Digger and his wife Susan are expecting their second child in March. He or she should provide some competition for their first, Douglas Aidan Donahue III. Digger still wields his (big) squash racket on occasion, or at least when he's not climbing the corporate ladder at Brown Brothers, Harriman, where he was recently promoted to manager. How's that, Digger?
The word from California is that Art Goldsher is earning his livelihood as a writer in Los Angeles. Art is also involved with some script and video/film editing. And a note from New York City reports that HillaryMiller is now the managing director of William D. Whitter Inc. in Manhattan.
Reunion chairman Steve Quigley is shooting for a new Dartmouth attendance record at our tenth reunion, so mark June 15 through 17 on your calendar and try to make it to our Green Beacon Weekend. And speaking of command performances, it's also time to remember the Alumni Fund. Any help that you could give the class and the College in that regard would be greatly appreciated.
That's it for now. When you have a moment, send along some class news. See you next month.
