Live from Randolph, N.J.! It's the '74 News,' with anchor Bill Cater, tonight with special reports from correspondent Owen "Ricko" Williams and articles of interest from Lafayette College, Manchester, N.H., and Bernardsville, N.J. This broadcast is brought to you by the class of '74, reunion committee and the 1984 Alumni Fund. And now, the news . . .
Easton, Pa.: G. Lyle Hoffman appears in a recent edition of the Lafayette College News, which announces his appointment as an assistant professor of physics at that institution. Prior to this appointment, Lyle was a research assistant and part-time lecturer at Cornell University. Congrats on the new job!
On the subject of new jobs, it is with great pleasure that I announce a career move of my own. After five years in financial analysis with General Foods, I have accepted a position with AT&T Communications (prior to the break-up this division was called Long Lines). I will be working on a new product, a high-speed shared fiber optic data transmission line, doing financial analysis. If any other classmates are involved in the world of AT&T, I would love to hear from you.
REUNION IS COMING! If you haven't done so already, circle the weekend of June 15-17, make your airline reservations, and prepare to re-enter the Dartmouth experience. A recent conversation with Ricko Williams (who now is occasionally called "Owen" by the uninitiated) reveals that, if current trends hold up, we will have the biggest tenth reunion ever! To be sure, this is no more than I would expect from this class we should really expect the record to be shattered and the new one to stand for years. Also, there are a number of special activities planned, including a special WDCR oldies broadcast into our reunion tent on Mass Row and a band bash on Saturday night. Be there it will be a truly special occasion!
Ricko also gave me the goods on a number of classmates. He reports that Steve Bell was in San Francisco in recent months, and that he has a "real pretty wife"-(yes, but what's her name, Owen?). He is working as a lawyer in Minneapolis, in the same firm as Jack Manning '72. Doug Lind, our very able reunion chairman, has been in retail sales at Smith Barney in San Fran and is "just starting to really hit" after his first year.
Our West Coast contingent really knows how to live. Ricko reports on a raft trip of several days' duration through the Grand Canyon with Dave Cranshaw, Doug Lind,Steve Allison, Jim McCulloch, Jack Manning '72, and Mike Salovaara '75. (Dave Cranshaw also brought his wife along for the trip, and I apologize to any participants whose names have been washed overboard.) Dave is "the only guy who can ride a rubber raft down the Colorado River with a beer in one hand and a cigar in the other and still manage to keep the cigar dry throughout the day." Ricko claims that Dave's attention to his noxious tobacco is probably due to his having been made a partner of his Atlanta law firm. Dave and wife Janie were also recently in the Hanover area visiting his parents.
This unique expedition also included Las Vegas, the Atlantic City of Nevada (see how living in New Jersey can really warp your views?) where the group joined up with Chip Reese '73, better known as the world champion of seven-card stud. While particulars of the Vegas section of the trip are a bit vague, it was reported that the group did go to a restaurant where Chip had dropped a substantial amount of dinero the previous week and dinner was on the house! More of the Ricko report next month.
For the first time, I am awarding dual '"74 ROAR" awards. The first one goes to DonNielsen, who is competing in his second Olympics at Sarajevo, Yugoslavia, as I write. Don's sport is the biathlon, which combines cross-country skiing and rifle marksmanship. He describes.the sport: "It's like smoking a pack of cigarettes, then running a 440-yard dash, and then trying to thread a needle." By the time this column is in your hands the winter Olympics will be over, but the class extends its encouragement and congratulations!
The second '"74 ROAR" has a bit of a story that goes with it. A few weeks ago I was reading the entertainment section of our local paper, which shares that section with several other papers in this part of the state. The cover article told of a group of musicians who, feeling that the world did not adequately appreciate their particular instrument, arranged Christmas carols for their own use and ventured forth to play wherever they saw Christmas lights. This group, led by former bandie Jim Felter, has found a unique way to express the wishes of the seaon as "The Phantom Trombone Choir." A '"74 ROAR," therefore, to Jim you can bring your group to my front yard anytime!
Till next month . . .
