I tried to phone Bob Sullivan at Sports illustrated the last time I was in New York, but a colleague said he was out on assignment. Since it was February, I assumed that he was working on the bathing suit issue. But when I returned to Montreal I received a letter from our far-flung correspondent and found that he had been on a really tough assignment: covering the 1984 winter Olympics at Sarajevo. After grousing about the Canadian hockey team's win over the Yanks, Sully went on to give his itinerary for the trip: Italian Dolomites, Yugoslavia, Bucharest for the David Cup, Paris, then home to New York. It's a miserable job but someone's got to do it. Sul- ly's handwriting is hard to read but I think he wrote: "John and Glo Kilmartin's first kid, Erin, is lovely. Art Beaver and I went to Providence last autumn, played golf, and fell in love with the kid."
We can't all go to Sarajevo, but we can all make plans to attend our tenth reunion, June 15-17. Cate Waddell noted in her newsletter that more than 250 classmates have expressed interest in attending " the celebrations. The tenth-year reunion record is 238, which should be easy for us to top.
I should also mention that the ancien regime has organized a nominating committee for selecting the nouveau regime. Classmates are welcome to contact Cate, who's the committee chairperson, or Joe Durham, EmilyFoley Parry, Tom Snickenberger, Dave Robertson, or Greg Hakanen with suggestions for new class officers. Check your alumni directories for their addresses. Cate's address is on the newsletter.
Promotions, promotions. Stephen Rattigan has been named secretary-assistant manager, property facultative underwriting, at North American Reinsurance Corporation. Whew! What's "facultative?" Stephen started his career in insurance (as opposed to "reinsurance") in 1976 at Philadelphia Manufacturers Mutual Insurance Company, where he rose to the position of assistant vice president.
The Dartmouth National Bank named Mike Sandoe assistant vice president. Mike lives with his wife Carola and three children in Etna, N.H., where he is a member of the volunteer fire department. No mention of "rebanking" there. Charles Schetter was elected a principal of McKinsey and Company, an international management consulting firm based in San Francisco.
Notes from all over: "After a four-year Navy stint in southern California and Hawaii," writes John Britton, "I have moved to Maine. I am currently doing emergency medicine while my wife Martha is in surgery residency. My two kids are in the wild toddler stage."
John Carmony and wife Michelle write from Midland, Tex.,to report that they are the proud parents of Adam Lloyd, born in March. "He is a delightful little fellow," writes John, "who has made our transition to parenthood quite easy." (John and Martha Britton, take heart.) "Oil business continues to improve. Our little company, Tucker Exploration, is charging ahead and is having some success, despite the occasional dry hole."
