Welcome back to the column. I hope everyone had a great summer. I understand that this is my last year as class secretary (wait for applause to die down), so if any classmates want the excitement of corresponding with someone in an exotic land (like Quebec), they'd better do it between now and next June.
Let's start the year off right with a collective pat on the back. Henry Eberhardt 111 '61 wrote to congratulate our head agent, Jeff Bennett, and "his hard-working class agents and generous classmates" for setting a new Dartmouth eighth-year-out Alumni Fund record. Our donations of $35,681 topped the old record set by the class of 1974. Kudos to Jim and all who helped to bring honor and money to our class and the College.
Tom Snickenberger must have a private clipping service to rival a major library. I've already reported on Snick's marriage to Patricia Wolcott, but news about the wedding keeps coming in. The latest announcement was kindly sent by Harold Ripley, secretary for the class of 1929. It must be great to have so many friends who want to make sure that your nuptials are publicized.
Don Rosenthal '81 sent along a note to report that he worked as a summer associate with Bob King in the Chicago law firm of Sonnenschein, Carlin, Nath and Rosenthal. He also notes that Bob has remarried, to Robin Smith, who's a lawyer with Mayer, Brown and Piatt. "Bob still has his Dartmouth diploma on his office wall, despite a lot of Chicago abuse," writes Don. "He was always ready to have a beer with a lowly summer associate. It is reputed that he managed to fit in a round of golf on his wedding day before the ceremony, I believe."
Dan and Rosey Skorich sent Barbara and me a happy-wedding-anniversary card, of all things. (I notice the rest of you forgot to commemorate the big day.) Rosey and Dan love Milwaukee after their stint in Las Animas, CO. "It's a great place to live," writes Dan. "Clean, safe, and lots of things to do. Actually, too many things to do. We have to budget our baby-sitting money. I'm enjoying my shift to ophthalmology, but there's too much to learn. I haven't seen any Dartmouth friends since Snick's wedding." (There's that wedding again.)
Dan asked me if I got in touch with Jeff Barndt and his wife Kathy during our recent trip to Britain. Well, sort of. I tried to track down Jeff through Amoco's London office, but it turned out he was one step ahead of me and now works in The Hague. I thought it would be fun for the two of us to send a congratulatory telegram to Bob Vaeth on the day of his wedding (May 28) in Mantoloking, NJ. It sounded like a good idea a telegram from two friends in London and all. But now Jeff was out and it was just me sending the congratulations. Fine. But wait no address. "New Jersey" seemed a little vague, so I fired off a postcard to Jeff in The Hague. Did he have the address of Bob's new in-laws in New Jersey? No, but he and Kathy loved their new posting and planned to stay a year. So much for my idea. You can see how well-organized I was on this trip. Anyway, belated congratulations, Bob and Jane, from Jeff in The Hague and me in Montreal.
Short Takes: Jake McFadden is an attorney with Glankler, Brown and Gilliland in Memphis. He and his wife Harriet now have a baby girl to keep them busy. Bill Trescher received his medical degree last May from the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center of Penn State University in Hershey, PA. Bill will do his residency at Case Western Reserve Hospital in Cleveland, specializing in pediatrics.
