Ten years ago this same typewriter (and ribbon) tapped out Russian literature papers in 205 South Fayerweather. As the first rain of April graces the sand-covered Minneapolis streets, I don't so much yearn for those days on the Hanover Plain when spring used to erupt around us as much I seek further reprieve from the writing of this installment. Back then I could count on Jim Danaher, who used to park his bike next to my desk, for a few moments of procrastination. Maybe TimBehr would saunter into the room for a game of cards, or Jim Mahon would bounce his soccer ball off the door in search of recruits. If I happened to glance outside I might see one of the Maine boys from upstairs - MartyMilligan, Wes Chapman, or Rob Clapp - rappelling past the dormitory window. As often as not Kenny Joiner would return to the room, toss me something cold from the fridge, and thereby place the paper on indefinite hold. Ten years later my discipline has not improved remarkably.

Word has arrived that Chris Schmidt is engaged to Kathryn Anne Davies. Kathryn, a graduate of Wheaton College, is a customer services administrator at the National Bank of Lebanon in Hanover, while Chris is a social studies teacher at Lebanon High School. The wedding is scheduled for June. In St. Louis, Punk and Poco Carlie have become the proud parents of Ryan Scott. Ryan arrived on the scene last September.

Jean Rosston is in her second year of a J. Paul Mellon Fellowship at the Philadelphia Museum of Art as a conservator of paintings. Her fellowship has taken her to musuems and art galleries in northern Europe and East Germany. At the time of her note, Jean was looking for future employment: "Anyone know of paintings or works of art or paper in need of restoration in some fabulous and exotic place, like Nepal?"

The opening paragraph from an article in the Laconia, N.H., Evening Citizen of January 18 reads: "Laconia attorney Janet O'Neill has been invited by President Ronald Reagan to attend the Republican National Convention in Dallas next August as an alternate delegate." Janet, who is the county chairman for the campaign to re-elect Reagan, has been involved in politics at the local and state level for a number of years. Janet practices law as a member of an all-O'Neill, all-Dartmouth firm in Laconia, N.H., which includes her father James Sr., her brother Jim Jr., and her sister Christina.

World travelers Garth and Lindsay Larrabee Greimann have left Seoul and are now established in Taipei, Taiwan. When Lindsay wrote, Garth was busy as the deputy general manager of the branch office of the First National Bank of Boston, while Lindsay was earnestly searching for new living accommodations. According to her, any selection of a piece of real estate must take into consideration the possibility of visits by both snakes and burglars. There is no shortage of either. Lastly, Lindsay confided that a minor Greimann is due near the end of June.

One way to get a response out of you folks is to print something inaccurate. At least it works sometimes. Scott Thayer sent a pleasant note from the Embassy in Honduras informing us that "for aficionados of diplomatic minutiae, my actual title here in the Embassy is second secretary." Scott went on to describe the birth of his first child, Karen Elizabeth, last December. All Big Greeners are welcome to visit Honduras. "Despite the exaggerated press reports, life here is moderately pleasant, but the tourist sites are few and far between."

In Olean, N.Y., Bill 'Twig" Branch is engaged in a very successful career in the insurance business. Bill is president of the Iroquois Insurance Group, a family business where Bill works alongside of his father, Paul '48. According to a recent article, this company has grown remarkably since it was formed in 1977, as a result of creative concepts in management, finance, and ownership. The Branches operate their business in southwestern New York state.

Kevin Koloff sends news from Los Angeles: "David Cutler, who, having survived three grueling years of residency and volleyball at Santa Monica Hospital, is now going off to Alabama to run a rural medical clinic

. . . Mark Ruben, who is currently living in San Mateo, is acting as personal manager for a not-yet-famous rock singer while contemplating medical school." Seriously, Mark, consider your age. Kevin is still an entertainment lawyer in Century City.

A very reliable source, Terry Ann Scriven '78, informed me that she had run across Steve Oakes in Rochester, Minn. The Whiz Kid from Cloquet is doing graduate medical research at the Mayo Clinic. This scribe, among others, would like to know, Steve, if you still perform the patented "Oakey" dance at the end of a school quarter?

Back in Hanover the Alumni Fund is in full swing. This is just a reminder that while quantity is important, participation is the key at our stage of the game.

That is the news from the home of the Minnesota Twinkies. If you are having a baby or getting married, be sure to let us know.
