When 111 Dartmouth Alumni Award recipients were honored guests of the Board of Trustees and the Alumni Council at a special dinner program on May 31, 1985, in Thompson Arena, it was truly a once-in-a-lifetime event. Synchronous with the 150th meeting of the Alumni Council, the assembly totaled approximately 420 Big Greeners, including wives. The program, which will surely be reported elsewhere in this journal, was a vivid manifestation of the unique devotion Dartmouth evokes from her alumni and the reciprocal gratitude of Alma Mater.

The 1922 delegation, largest of the 61 classes represented, consisted of seven Alumni Award recipients and their mentors: Bill Bullen, Haskell and HarrietCohn, Jack and Fran Dodd, Carroll andNan Dwight, Killy and Helen Kilmarx,Ike and Jane Miller, and Len and Margaret Morrissey. Two Alumni Award classmates, our departed Frank Horan and Gene Hotchkiss, were sadly missed. It was heartwarming for the Twoters to be together again, not only at the dinner but all during their stay in Hanover.

This May 1985 Council meeting completed the three-year term of Len Morrissey as the oldest member of the Council. "Former Councilors (however) have long made significant contributions to the work of the Council. They are invited to the plenary sessions and to all social functions." So, as classmates would expect, Len will be there as long as he can remain vertical and vocal.

From the "Big Green Sports News," May 14, 1985: "Senior Captain Debbie Willing and sophomore Chrissie Stearns teamed together to pull out a clutch 7-6, 7-5 doubles victory as the Big Green defeated Princeton for the first time in Dartmouth women's tennis history. The team finished its best spring season ever." Now, just what relevancy does that have with the octogenarian class of 1922? Well, Christina Louise Stearns '87 is the granddaughter of our departed classmate Stewart P. Stearns and his widow, Louise. Chrissie is likewise the daughter of Stewart P. Stearns Jr. '54, and her mother is Christina Dickey Stearns, the daughter of John Sloan Dickey '29 and his wife, Christina. And that, in our humble opinion, makes Chrissie Stearns '87 an honorary member of all Dartmouth classes.

To a class which has seen transportation evolve from the horse and buggy to the trolley car, to the automobile, to the Concorde, star-dusting around the world may now seem somewhat trite. But recently two extraordinary travel tales have come to light. First, because he is only an 85-year-old youngster, it is indeed pleasant to report that Stan Miner has successfully made his ninth trip to Europe, especially to spectacular Switzerland. He could now call each mountain by its Swiss nickname, if he wished. The other flight birds are a young couple. Warren Daniell is only 84, and he and his wife, Jeanne, are young at heart. As "people-to-people" representatives they spent three weeks in China. What's unusual about that? Nothing except that the Chinese with their reverence for old age were flabbergasted or whatever the Chinese equivalent to see Warren in abbreviated apparel on his matutinal jog through the countryside.

Ray and Doris Atwood, Bill Bullen,Carroll and Nan Dwight, and Len andMargaret Morrissey represented '22 at Class Officers Weekend in early May. It was a busy and informative occasion for 374 completely volunteer alumni and 174 spouses.

Classmates will sorrowfully learn that Clark Bristol and Shep Naylor have left us. Obituaries will follow.

Writing an obituary for Kent Hayes and saying that he and Chuck Vose were our only classmates from Oklahoma sparked the question as to how many students from Oklahoma now attend Dartmouth. The count for 1984 was 23 undergraduates, with 124 alumni living in Oklahoma. And thanks to Mrs. George W. James (Lyda Hayes) who said in an appreciated letter, "Uncle Chuck is doing great." Twoters will be delighted to learn that for Chuck Vose everything is OK in Oklahoma City.

"He forgot the Alumni Fund!" Never ever, official figures not released as of this writing but enough said to offer warm congratulations to Spenny Smith and the men and women in the class of 1922. Full report next month.
