Thank you for your cards and notes. Unfortunately ALS is progressive. I have now lost the use of both legs, and my throat is affected. As a result I require the services of an aide almost full time. In answer to an inquiry as to how one lives with the no cause, no treatment, no cure pronouncement: you cope, hoping that ALS will plateau at some point. For instance, when you are advised by the Dartmouth Alumni Magazine that an additional class column has been added (September, for all reunion and non-reunion classes), you cope.
Or, you depend on that wonderful support network, the Amazing '38, to cover such things as the Class Officers Weekend, convened May 3-4 at Hanover. The class of '38 was well represented: BobReeve, Bob Hallock, Bob Ross, GilTanis, Bob Manegold, and Dick Francis. Thanks to Bib Bankart, class secretary of '37, and Dick Francis, I was provided with a complete taping of the general sessions and the secretaries' meeting. The input by the class secretaries was fascinating and down to earth. Speaking for myself I would like to commend the work of my editor, Teri Allbright. She has been most patient and always helpful.
Our sympathy to the following classmates whose wives died in June: JuliusWestheimer, Jack Lutz, and Rod Washburn. Westy and Ernie started "going together" when he was a freshman.
Several classmates attended the memorial service for Carl von Pechmann in Hartford on June 5. Carl served as secretary during our college years and carried the ball for years after graduation.
A letter sent to the alumni of Ashbury College (Ottawa, Ontario) regarding DavePolk is quoted in some detail: "You will be interested to learn that David Polk Sr., after a long and successful career at Ashbury, will retire at the end of the present school year at the age of 67.
"Mr. Polk has only been at Ashbury for 45 years, not, as some would believe, since it was founded! He came to Ashbury in 1940, after graduating from Dartmouth College two years earlier. Apart from his four years of service in the U.S. Merchant Marines from 1943 to 1947, he has been here ever since. Having taught in the Senior School until 1951, he then took over the Junior School, in which he is still teaching today.
"Many of us have fond memories of his classes always lively and stimulating and think of him with affection. I feel it would be appropriate to express our gratitude and regard by presenting him with a gift on his retirement. (We have been assured that this is positively his last retirement!)"
The presentation was made at the closing ceremonies at Ashbury, early in June. The letter closed with, "I'm sure all old boys would agree we should do the right thing by Polky: he certainly deserves it!" The '38 golf group continued their play into the summer; 11 turned up at the Duxbury Yacht Club in June as guests of Brad Jenkins. Nine made the game at Tanuck Country Club (Worcester), hosted by Bob Hallock. Incidentally, we received a report that Bob was "on a three-week golf tour in Europe some special deal."
Russ Tolles has been elected to the executive committee of the Dartmouth Club of Northwestern Connecticut.

A rousing cheer for Gil Tanis and Amazing '38 for going over the top in the Alumni Fund drive. This is Gil's second year, and he is batting 1,000.
Our thanks to Belden Bly, perhaps the only '38er with a bridge named for him. And, to Sandy Mills for his invitation to visit and climb Pikes Peak. Not this year, Sandy.
