No news is neither good news nor bad news. It's just no news. But I sense something out there, something lurking, growing in importance and number even as we speak. I sense the imminent arrival of an event which will change our class forever. At some point during this coming "school year," most of us will turn 30. So come on down. As you read this, such notables as Jim Stein, Libby Roberts, Bob Keefer,Graham Beene, Lloyd Albert, Jim Schley,John Saer, Alex Spalding, Paul Centenari, and Dan Billman are crossing that magical threshold. We don't have everyone's birthdate so be grateful if your name is left out and your rapidly deteriorating mental faculties are not revealed.
The Boston Society of Architects is asking Scott Kilbourn to leave the country. But there is a catch since Scott is supposed to return bearing the fruits of his one-year study abroad. Scott won the award, which is funded by the Rotch Traveling Scholarship, for his design of a new house of detention to replace the Charles Street jail in Boston.
I thought of summer theater when Andy Kline spoke of playing the country parson in the form of the Vicar of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. This is the real thing, however. Andy and his wife, Kathy (a first year medical student at Yale), live in East Haddam, Conn., with wild man Chris, their one-year-old son. (I still think it sounds like a musical that BethBlatt will end up in sooner or later.)
Mark Nawrocki decided that being a doctor meant not having to write in complete sentences. Hey, he's a busy guy so pay attention: "graduated 6/8/86 (Dart. Med.), married 6/14/86 to Julianne Stoughton (also Dart./ Brown Med.), off to U. of Rochester for 0B/Gyn. residency while Julianne enters a surgery residency."
Gratuitous use of sports metaphors really bothers me. Take the article on PeterRoby that spoke of how Peter would be "dribbling" down the aisle last August 2 with Sandra Gullicksen, a Waltham schoolteacher. I prefer to think that once Peter proved himself in the one-on-one competition, he decided to become a team player. (See, it just doesn't work.) Anyway the reception was to be in the Harvard hockey rink, probably to cage the Dartmouth crowd. Apparently Peter gave some thought to selling tickets to watch the event but calmer heads prevailed. I would have paid for a seat behind the net.
Yes, it's no secret that Dartmouth men have always thought highly of themselves, regardless of the granite in the brain business, so it is a sobering thought to note that three of our female classmates, Mademoiselles Brier, Fraser, and Twyman, have hitched themselves to graduates of 8.C., Harvard, and Williams, respectively. Gentlemen, I suggest that we investigate this nasty trend to determine how it is that these beautiful and talented women could not find suitable Big Greeners. Well, Judy's husband, Kevin Donnelly, got himself a J.D. and M.B.A. (the latter from Tuck) so you can't fault the poor girl. Probably overwhelmed by all of those degrees. (Yeah, that's it. That's the ticket!) Kevin is vice president and assistant general manager of the Yankee Companies in Cohasset, Mass. Judy is a financial analysis manager at Fidelity Investments in Boston.
Next we try to rationalize Lisa Twy-man's digression. Her husband, John Bessone, is a v. p. of the Gordon Richland Company, a Chicago investment banking concern. Ah, no problem. Look, everyone loves those investment bankers. It's just a fad; it will pass. John used to work at ABC Sports in New York, which, I bet, is where he met Lisa. Lisa is now a freelance writer after having served time for Sports Illustrated in New York.
Finally, we come to Kathy Fraser's choice of Mr. John J. Williams. Hold it, what's this? John went through the Dart./ Brown med. school program. We can claim him as one of our own. John is in his residency in orthopedics at R.I. Hospital. Kathy is in her second year of her residency at Butler Hospital. Jeff and CretaCross attended the ceremony, as did Sherrie LaPrade '8O, Prof. Dick Shafer, Jeff '81 and Barb Reily, Jeff ('81) and Susan Johnston, and Sheridan Dodge '68. Kathy, I also assume that your parents. made the trek from Australia.
Just so nobody will accuse me of a sexist perspective, we now shift our focus to A1 Rose and his non-Dartmouth wife of several months, Amy Kyle. Look, they're both lawyers, whattya want. Amy is a Columbia Law graduate and is practicing with Bingham, Dana and Gould in Boston. A1 works for Ropes and Gray. The two should be back by now from a honeymoon to France and Switzerland.
There are more weddings but we've had enough for a while, don't you agree? Let's just take the opportunity to pat ourselves on the back for last year's fundraising efforts. The Class of '79 won awards for highest participation in the telethons and broke the previous record for most donors in a class. It was an excellent effort and that handsome guy Ted Winterer should rest on his laurels for a little while at least.
