With positive propriety, the following masterpiece speaks for itself and for thousands of Dartmouth alumni: When we were students, we were quiet. We didn't protest. We didn't riot. We were not unwashed. We were not obscene. We made no demands on Prexy or Dean. We sat no sit-ins. We heckled no speakers. We broke not a window. Few students were meeker. We made a distinction between him and her. We answered our folks with "Yes, Mam" or "No, Sir." So I'm forced to admit, with some hesitation, All we got out of school was an education.

Thanks to George Brooks and to Charlie Earle for this little gem. Classmate Brooksie, Ph.D., emeritus professor of English, included the verse in a reunion presentation prepared for the class of 1938 at the University of Rhode Island, of which he was an honorary member. He sent a copy to Charlie Earle, who wondered if it might sometime seem appropriate for the '22 class notes. That time apparently has come - and, it is hoped, has passed.

Rarely, if ever, have so few dissidents attained so much publicity from tranquil Hanover.

In his notes Professor Brooks also had an example which might explain some causes of student unrest. He cited an exchange of opinions when a law student complained that the law school he was attending was trying to make him think like a lawyer. In reply, a graduate of the same school wrote:

"Mr. T. has apparently decided to try, from his vantage point as a student, to change law schools the way he thinks they should be. It turns out he's not really against molding; he simply wants to be the molder instead of the moldee. It seems a little egotistical, when you find that you and an educational system don't mesh, to assume that the fault is the educational system and not yours, and that the solution is to change the system to fit you rather than for you to change yourself."

So, what else is new?

Dartmouth College, the alumni, and especially the class of 1922 were sadly stricken when '22 class president WilburW. Bullen died February 24, 1986. Bill will always be remembered as a legendary Dartmouth man. An obituary will follow.

This year a contribution to the Alumni Fund is much more than a donation to our College. It is a vote of confidence in Dartmouth.
