Two more baby notes for the class: Tom and Karen Kavanaugh are the proud parents of Alexandra, born in Sobiski, Wis., in April. Chris and Jane Brewster also report the birth of the their first child, Will, in Alexandria, Va., in June.

On the career ladder, Craig Bentley recently joined Bank of Boston's Treasury/Investment Banking Group as director of foreign exchange, where he will oversee all foreign exchange trading and marketing for the bank. Craig was vice president and treasurer for the Netherlands branch offices of Citibank until last year, when he took an extended leave of absence. During the leave, Craig and Kathy toured much of the world and lectured in Bangladesh and India for the U.S. Information Service.

John and Nancy Jurkovich are getting settled in their new home in Edina, Minn., although John is traveling regularly between Pillsbury's home office in Minneapolis and Teaneck, N.J./ where Haagen-Dazs ice cream, a Pillsbury subsidiary, is made. John is chief engineer for Haagen-Dazs, and reports that making ice cream without any additives is challenging. John and I have once again lost touch with Dan Holland, who is apparently still working for U.S. Customs and still moving about every six months. Time to check in with a new address, Dan.

Not much other news, so I'll close with a quote from a New York Times interview with President Freedman (yes, you can get the Times out here in the provinces): "I'm very concerned that one thing liberal education doesn't sufficiently address is the need for students to develop both a private self and a public self, and to find a way to have those selves converse with each other and form a whole human being . . . It's important that students develop the capacity to be alone with themselves, to address grief, to address questions of tragedy in their life, to address the questions of the relationship between the generations in their own lives.

"And I worry that too many of today's undergraduates are primarily concerned with things which don't give them much opportunity, as part of liberal education, to develop their private selves . . ."

Those are interesting thoughts from our new leader; I hope many of you had the chance to read the entire interview, and will send comments to our newsletter editor, Allan Lovell, 156 Dartmouth Street, Portland, Maine 04103. Meanwhile, keep sending your short news to me, and I'll see you next month.
