"The Class is Back." And, indeed, the class of '62 was back in force for our 25th in Hanover. Gene Gasbarro and his committee, together with Dave Orr and the entire College, put on a show that none of the 705 in attendance (255 alumni, 450 family) will soon forget. Who could forget: Thad Seymour's sprint to the Bema podium; Thayer Hall without Miss Gill, conveyors or dogs; the class seminars; the Heartbreakers; Ross Burkhardt's lights and sound extravaganza; Mr. Coor's tapped elixir; the perfect Hanover weather; Dave Gundy's sleek heavyweight (?) crew; Mutual of Omaha's African eagle being attacked by three New Hampshire crows; Tom Green's appearance without counsel; Dave McLaughlin's graciousness . . . and the simple act of reuniting? The most poignant point: the class of '62 memorial service on Sunday in which Tom Grey asked, "Are you with me now?" Judging from the results of the reunion, Tom has his answer.
Dusty Miller sums up the 25th: "It was a weekend of very personal encounters. Much of the trivia, the seeking of goods and status was left behind and we could relate to one another as friends, colleagues and classmates once again and, in the process, recognize that Dartmouth's true greatness lies not in the very fine education it provided us but, equally important, in the sense of fellowship and commitment: to each other, to the ideals of the college, and to making the world a better place. Those who were not able to attend missed something very precious."
In addition to putting on a hell of a reunion, the class of '62 isn't bad in the fundraising category either. We have set a new 25th-reunion class record for the Alumni Fund of, count it, $1,651,962—some $30,000 over goal. Barry Alperin, head agent, and his hit squad of Mike Rouzee, Al Rapoport,Bruce Feldman, Bill Whaley, John Clarkand John Walters obviously are the major heavies, together with a team of assistant extortionists positioned strategically around the U.S. Like Beamon's long jump record, this one won't be broken easily.
Your new class officers for the next five years are: Gene Gasbarro, president; JohnKnight, vice president; Charlie Giersch, secretary; Bill Sadd, treasurer; Tom Komarek, newsletter editor; and Art Hoover, mini-reunion chairman. The results of this hard fought election were announced at reunion and have been validated by Tanzi. The 25th reunion yearbook, a "10" publication by Carl Jaeger, Gordy Williamson and Jere Hawkins, provides the '62s with an excellent update on our lives through June 1987; both Tom Komarek and I need continuing input from the class, so keep in touch. We would be particularly interested to hear from those who were able to make the 25th (pictures welcome) and from those who couldn't and want a more detailed update.
On the non-reunion front: Gary Spiess was named general counsel of Bank of Boston Corporation and its subsidiary, the First National Bank of Boston. Gary has been with 808 since 1975, having survived Harvard Law School and Boston traffic. Gary, Betsy and boys live in Marblehead, Mass. Dick Couturier has been appointed vice president of Right Associates, a leading management consulting firm out of Providence, R.I. A corporate consulting specialist, Dick will be responsible for the firm's business development and client liaison. A grad of Purdue's School of Management and alumnus of Owens-Corning Fiberglas, Dick lives in Warwick, R. 1., where he still listens for the sound of one hand clapping.
Roy Abbanat, a pediatrician in Pleasanton, Calif., has his own practice and three children to practice on: Beth, 18; Karen, 16; and Brian, 14. Roy's wife, Carol, is a graduate of Mary Hitchcock School of Nursing but is now following the beat of a different
drum—as a private piano teacher. Claude Jardon could not make the reunion; he was in France for a family holiday. He does send his best wishes to SonnyKabler, Jack Edwards, Gordy Owens among others. Claude plants his feet in Jopkin, Mo.
Ah, yes. The Class/Family is Back! Sipping on Jay Fritz spitzers and looking forward to the next 25. Stay tuned for information on mini-reunions, the '62 fellowship and more.
