74 1-75 is the route between Macon and Atlanta, a route which has been worn down by my 4x4. Although this road seems at times endless, I am reminded of one of my favorite clients, Joe Smalley, a coast-to-coast long-distance truck driver who told me one time that he had been on almost every highway and expressway in the U.S.Joe was at die mercy of every sheriff, garage-owner, and mechanic in small towns across the U.S. Well, during one trip Joe had some trouble with his truck, and the load of potatoes he was transporting ended up being sold at the Atlanta Farmers Market, an alleged violation of the the U.S. Code. Joe was lucky: the jury just could not link him to those potatoes—even his name on the parking ticket at the farmer's market was misspelled. So there he was last week, still free as a bird, passing me and waving on the way to Atlanta. As I told the jury, the long-distance truck driver is the last of the great American folk heroes.

James R. Lay and his wife, Barbara, are living in Columbia, Md., with their sons Charlie 11 and Tim 7. James is project manager and group leader at W. R. Grace & Co.'s Washington research center. They are currently working on improving production of hollow-fiber membranes for artificial organs. Barbara is at the Pratt Library in Baltimore helping start a reference center. The Lays are active in Cub and Boy Scouts, youth soccer, baseball, and restoring their old house.

Matt Putnam writes from Edina, Minn., that he and his wife and three children are happily in search of deep meaning to his life. His advice to our class members who are looking for wilderness is to visit the Boundary Waters Canoe Area and to "bring DEET."

I recently saw Frank Wilson at PerryBallard's wedding (more on that later) and he was asking about Ellis Rowe. Well, Ellis and his wife and three sons recently moved to Lancaster, Pa., where Ellis is vice president and plant manager for M&M Mars Chocolate Factory.

Tom Eggleston and his wife, Kathy, and their three boys (3,2, and 1) have recently moved from Indianapolis to Grand Rapids. Tom has taken the position of vice president and general counsel of Amway Corporation. Amway did $3 billion in sales in 50 countries. They are looking forward to enjoying Lake Michigan and the new house.

Tim Gilchrist is still living in Denver, has been married for 12 years, and has three children: Lindsey 9, Timmy 7, and MacKenzie 2. Tim has been selling commercial real estate for the last 13 years and is doing great.

Jon Rabinowitz is a partner in the Roseland, N.J., firm of Ravin, Sarashon, and practices bankruptcy law. He and his wife, Bethany, recently celebrated their 17th wedding anniversary. Their older son, nine-yearold David, just took second place in a novice wrestling tournament in Bloomfield, N.J.

Next month will feature a gala event: the marriage of Perry Ballard. Until then, I leave you with this question: who taught JohnFisher how to spell?
