New England is having another great ski season; enough cold and snow delights those of us cross-country skiers who can't fall back on snowmaking. I find that my family with two youngsters is typical for having converted from alpine lift lines. Former Big Green skier Bill Phillip notes that cost and time have switched his focus to cross-country. Bill practices psychiatry in Denver, having completed med school at Colorado University. He and Barbara occasionally escape to the nearby mountains to relive their alpine days; mostly they relax by teaching Jessica, five, and Lora, two, how to kick and glide.
Jerry Rinehart writes from Minneapolis that his daughter Jill is a Dartmouth '91, having been accepted early decision, jerry's wife, Peggy Mann, notes that Jill is a third generation Dartmouth Mann, following grandfather Steve Mann '45 and uncle Bob Mann '67. While Allison, 11, has no interest yet in Hanover, seven-month old Ross wears a 2009 class shirt continuously. Perhaps the Rineharts could have one of the first and last offspring admitted? Jerry is director of undergraduate programs for the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota and continues to teach undergraduate English in addition. Peg left the corporate world two years ago to pursue a free-lance writing career.
Having problems with Mastercard? Call Peter Dunn. Pete is the credit card expert for the consulting firm Edgar, Dunn, and Conover in San Francisco. He helped Mastercard streamline their credit-approval policies and developed their foreign-exchange rate policies. For an encore, he's developing "smart cards" containing computer chips for information storage and retrieval. He was asked by the city to study the feasibility of an intown baseball stadium and determined that it struck out. Pete earned his M.B.A. at Stanford and resides in Oakland with his wife, Laura, and his two teenagers.
Steve Calvert has established Dartmouth as the leader in alumni continuing education. As of January, Steve moved out of the Alumni Office to become director of Continuing Education and Conferences for the College, bringing his boundless energy to the expanded office. Congratulations, Steve.
