Although the class mailbag was not exactly bulging this month, two excellent pieces of news did make their way through the postal maze:
John Clark writes: "Thomas John Clark was born at Valley Hospital in Ridgewood (N.J.) on January 15, two months premature, following an emergency Caesarean. Norma is recovering nicely. The baby weighed three pounds five ounces and is otherwise healthy but experienced breathing problems common to prematures. He was transferred to the area neonatal intensive care facility where he made marvelous progress, thanks in part to one of the neonatologists, Dr. Barbara Kelly '78, and was returned after six days to Valley where he'll stay until he gets his weight up to five pounds. Whoever would have thought it possible; we weren't in the market for a baby, but were given a gift and are looking forward to being parents again (Rob is a Dartmouth junior, Elizabeth's a high school sophomore). I attribute the occasion to eight days on the Appalachian Trail, the exhilaration of the reunion, and the ambiance of 408 Lord Hall."
Moving smartly from babies to bankers, Bill Pierce was appointed chief credit officer of Chemical Bank (New York). He had previously been managing director and chief credit officer for the banking and corporate finance group and a member of Chemical's credit policy committee, of which he now becomes vice chairman. Bill has been with Chemical since graduation and was previously in charge of the special industries division, which included the energy, metals, mining, utilities, transmission, agribusiness, commodities, and ship finance industries. He became a senior VP in 1976 and an executive VP in 1983. Bill is on the Lending/Finance Division Council of Robert Morris Associates, is a member of the American Petroleum Institute, the Bankers Advisory Council of the American Gas Association, and the corporate development committee of the Brooklyn Museum. He is a director of the Buckeye Management Company and a trustee of the Council on the Environment of New York City. Walter Shipley, Chemical's chairman, sums up Bill's appointment: "Bill Pierce is one of our most experienced bankers, and I am very pleased that he is assuming this job of corporate-wide importance." So are we!
