Terry Bentley's body was discovered on June 30 just below the summit of one of the highest peaks in the Steamboat Springs area. Terry had been missing since April 5 after taking off in a light plane on a flight to Fort Collins, Colo. Our condolences and thoughts are with his wife, Meg, son Ryan, daughter Erin, and the entire Bentley family.
On an upbeat note, Bruce Nelson, assistant professor of history at Dartmouth, was awarded the Class of 1962 Faculty Fellowship for 1989-90. Our fellowship, the only such class-sponsored award, pays a substantial amount of a junior faculty member's salary for one term. This permits the individual to do research necessary for tenure consideration. Bruce, Princeton '62 (and lacrosse opponent of John Walters), will use the fellowship to research a pending book on the response of organized labor and white industrial workers to the civil rights movement over the past three decades. The fellowship was inaugurated in 1982 with the first award presented in 1983. Active on the fellowship committee have been GarySpiess, Dan Tompkins, Sandy Apgar, and Josh Rich.
From the usually reliable Janesville (Wis.) Gazette comes an article on Jeff Thomas, physician and poet. Jeff has established his medical practice in Janesville where he also serves as school board president. He recently published a small book of poetry titled Walk With Me, which celebrates the quiet moments of life. Jeff cites Robert Frost as a major influence on his own poetic style and expression.
