In a recent column I reported that Shaun Gurl was living in Boston, and attending Harvard Law School. I just received a letter from George Mannes in which he claims that Shaun does not now attend, nor ever has attended, Harvard Law School. Instead, he lives a quiet life in New York, where he works for Sports Illustrated, and rooms with George.

On the surface, it looked like I had made a mistake. That very though actually crossed my mind. However, I've never been wrong before, so I decided do to do a little checking before I chalked one up in the "loss" column. Here's what I found:

1.1 called Sports Illustrated, or The SportingNews, or one of those sports magazines, and they had never even heard of Shaun. I wondered, "If Shaun is such a hot shot, how come no one has ever heard of him?

2. I decided to go right to the source, and give Shaun a call. Funny, but no one answered the phone at their apartment. And I let it ring at least twice.

By this point it had become pretty obvious that Shaun did not live in New York. There were just too many coincidences. Why didn't he answer his phone? How come no one had ever heard of him? It didn't make sense. I had to find out where he was. I could have called Harvard Law School, but I didn't want to waste more money on a long distance call. I decided to just wait by the mailbox, hoping for clues.

It didn't take very long for the clues to start arriving. First/ there was a press release. It seems that Robert Cutler is living in East Thetford, Vt., while pursuing his doctorate in computer science at Dartmouth. In his spare time, Robert is working for Geographic Data Technology, Inc., which is located up in Lyme. This sounded like a promising lead. I quickly made a collect call to Lyme. We were on the phone for a good hour, and I still have no idea exactly what they do. Not surprisingly, however, they had never heard of Shaun Gurl, either.

Where does this leave us? We know that Shaun is not in New York City. We also know that Shaun is not in East Thetford. What city lies somewhere between these two sprawling metropolitan areas? That's right, it's Boston. Well, it all should be pretty clear by now. I'm sticking by my original story. Shaun is at Harvard Law School.

With that mystery out of the way, I could turn to some of the other mail that had been accumulating. Lisen Stromberg, who is married to Bill Rossi, wrote from Boston. Lisen is working for Fidelity Investments, while Bill is in his first year at Harvard Business School. Lisen reported on several other '84s in the Boston area.

Jim Wooster is "becoming a local hero" as the lead guitarist in the band "The Great Divide." The band has just finished their first album and is already hard at work on the second. Jim, if you guys ever need someone to dedicate your albums to, give me a call.

Mike Patsis is finishing Dartmouth Medical School and hoping to end up in Boston next year. Mike, I know that medical residents don't get paid much, so I did a little checking for you. It seems that Debbie Logan has just been promoted to a high-powered lending group at the Bank of Boston. If you ever need any money, and that goes for the rest of the class as well, don't hesitate to give Debbie a call.

Finally, Stewart Kim and Alix Madigan are both at the Wharton School of Business. Stewart had spent the past two years in Korea. Both are currently taking over the school. Alix is running the school's "Follies," and "dating the man of her dreams" (according to Lisen). Now before any of you decide to write in and tell me that you're living with either Stewart, Alix, or both of them, I urge you to reread this column, and learn from the mistakes of George Mannes. I am never wrong. I may not always be right, but I am never wrong.
