Well, it had to happen sooner or later: a typo. Horrors! The worst part is that it was class prexy Jack Little's new phone number. The correct number is 516/726-6585. Sorry!
The following notes are courtesy of Stet Whitcher, who often gets news with the dues. (Have you paid yours?)
First, a good idea from Bud Hewitt: "The idea occurred to me (while making a new will) that there will be many classmates who will live to a ripe old age so why not, among the specific bequests, provide one for Dartmouth 1940?" Thanks for the thought, Bud (and especially for the ripe old age part). Gordie Wentworth, our bequest chairman, will appreciate it.
And another thoughtful note, this one from Dr. Lew Lambert: "Wonder how long it will take to clean the Augean Stables in Hanover. We had our own strong minds dissidents if you will. Every era has their Page Smith, Chuck Bolte, and Tom Braden. That's the real challenge of an administration to control and direct these explosive minds and energies within the confines of tradition, decency and good taste directing them toward a meaningful future. I think our administration did it well. I can't say . the same for Kemeny on. My thought for the day. Happy holidays and best regards to the 'fearless forties.'"
Next, from Howard Marshall: "had a long telephone visit with Jack McDonald. He's doing well despite the handicap of prosthesis and rigid diet (for a diabetic condition). Made a tentative date for Jack to visit us in May at our cottage in N.H. Also have a telephone visit with Scotty Rogers about every three months. The Howard E. Marshall advertising agency merged into another agency three years ago and I stayed with the firm as VP. In about two months, I will give up the daily routine for a consulting status. I'm going to spend a lot of time in N.H. this summer and hope to get over to Hanover often. Stet, your dedication to the class is much appreciated by all of us, even though we don't always say it. Best! Howie."
Thanks, Stet, for those notes. And hey, anyone who got a bill for dues after having paid, it's not Stet's fault the gremlin in Blunt's computer has confessed.
Ann Porter Berger sends a note from Vero Beach to report that "1940 South" rallied in April to entertain the Hanover Host and Hostess of Every Year Bob and Crosbie MacMillen.
And then we heard from Howie Stockwell with some interesting ideas about 1940's authors. "Over the years I have read Page Smith's People's History of The UnitedStates and found them, by far, the best history of the U.S.I admit they are long I'm only just beginning vol. VII, America Entersthe World. I've also just read with great enjoyment - Jack Little's Love Songs andGraffitti. How many other books have been written by '40s? How many classmates have read the two above or other 1940 books? Why not send this information to Dick Bowman? Cordially, Howard Stockwell." We thank you for the good suggestion, Howard. And come on, you shy authors, let me have your titles. This can be the beginning of another interesting one for the 50th.
Bob Austin sent in a February bulletin that didn't thaw out for two weeks. Temps in the 12s and wind chill in the 30s he says. Also reports that daughter Pat has presented them with another grandson, Robin. This makes a total of six and their daughter Lisa is expecting in August. Bob's wife, June, hit the deck with pneumonia and spent a week in the hospital before getting clearance to come home. I called in March to learn that June is recuperating nicely and should be fine by the time you read this.
A phone conversation with Jack Little brings the welcome news that Bob Unangst has taken on the job of mini-reunion chairman. Welcome to Bob and well done to BillDuncan, who carried that load prior to Bob's taking over.
Joe Burnett wraps up the column with a letter explaining the photograph of StetWhitcher and six lovely members of the class of 1990. It happened at last fall's mini-R. Here was a brand new class in their first week, just 50 years after we had done the same. Since then copies of photo and letters have been exchanged, revealing once more the intelligent, hard-working, and spirited kind of person embracing Dartmouth these days. These students are indeed the best reason for giving to the College. And remember 1990 will be graduating as we attend our 50th. Here's to that!
