A panel discussion was held in Hanover in August on "The Middle East, Religion, Politics and War." The panel was part of a four-day program on the Middle East presented as a gift to Dartmouth College from the Class of '58 organized by Peter Herman. Panelists included Mahdi El-Baghdadi, former Iraqi diplomat and now professor of political science at Grambling; Rear Admiral HalBernsen, former commander U.S. Naval Forces in the Mideast and now a deputy chief of staff for the Atlantic Fleet; and JohnVoll, UNH history professor and expert on Islamic fundamentalism. Thanks from the class both to the participants who bring a wealth of expertise to this timely subject and to Pete Herman for conceptualizing and organizing the program.

John Whiteley aid a wonderful job as class Alumni Fund chairman. In the great tradition of our other busy men who have found time for this demanding task, both the big picture was covered (leadership gifts were terrific which distinguished '58 from all the rest) and the loyal givers were also cultivated (you and I!). Approximately 384 '58s joined the ranks of givers for 63 percent of the class, two points above the overall College average; $12,317,201 in unrestricted aid ana assistance flowed to Dartmouth as a result of the drive. Our class set a "year out" record again with $210,297. Well done to all.

While in college, Bill Van Law was a calm, steady, and reliable fellow. After graduation, he for some years operated ladies apparel stores in central Illinois. Along the way, he did postgraduate work at Harvard Business School's Advanced Management Program. He relocated to Florida and recently joined Shearson Lehman Hutton in its office in Ponte Vedra at Park Place in Sawgrass Village, Suite 2205 (tel. 285- 8118). Bill specializes in financial consulting, where those character traits are perfectly suited.

Hope you enjoyed the recent issues of this magazine. A brighter format and livelier tone reflect much effort and dedication by the editor and staff. It is a pleasure to report the accomplishments of '58s but in one area we aren't doing very well. It's a sad note but some of our classmates don't pay class dues. In addition to such things as the panels we've sponsored, your dues support the Dartmouth Alumni Magazine. Yet some of us who haven't paid dues for years continue to receive the magazine, subsidized by those who do pay. Friends, you are as fine and fair a group of gentlemen as one could encounter. If you haven't paid your class dues, please do so today and don't stop for at least 30 years.

The campaign for the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania ended when Al Ertel narrowly lost the primary election. Any state that elects judges probably deserves exactly what it gets but certainly Pennsylvania lost the services of a fine man. The Ertels have a son in the junior class at Dartmouth and hope to get to Hanover more frequently now that campaigning is at least temporarily behind them.
