Just as I am about to leave, news pours in. JerryManne, president of Alaska Commodities in Chicago, has established the Jerry Manne '58 Endowment for Environmental Studies at Dartmouth. The fund will provide seed money to help finance environmental projects and is only the latest contribution from a person who has faithfully supported the College since graduation.

The New York Times reported in January that Carl McCall, "Governor Cuomo's first choice as the Democratic nominee," would not run for state controller. I am certain Carl's reasons were sound as he is ever politically astute, but the people of New York will never find a better candidate.

This item is about Larry Schwartz who is not with L'Oreal. He is vice president of technology with Loral Corp., the defense contractor. Thank you, Stephanie Bass, a/k/a Mrs. Schwartz.

As we glide gracefully through our 50s, many have a long list of distinguished activity in community and country. One such is John Parker, always a quiet force for progress. John was recently named chair of the board of Lesley College of Cambridge, Mass. John founded Liberty Square Investment Associates in 1981. He has also served the Photographic Resources Center, the Charles H. Hood Foundation, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Boston, and has been president of both the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Eastern Massachusetts and the Tuck Alumni Association of Boston—a partial list, but a complete tribute to John.

The resignation of Jim Dougherty as president of Supermarkets General Corp., Woodbridge, N.J., was announced in late 1989. We await a further report.

Jim Crawford's daughter Betsy and husband Bill Regan, both Dartmouth alumni, are serving in Zaire, Africa, where they will spend several years trying to improve conditions. The basic drive to be of service to others can be traced through the generations. For example, Jim's father, Dr. Henry Crawford '26, taught surgery in India after retirement.

Larry Scoville has a challenging new position. In this era when the practice of law is changing so rapidly, he has been named chairman of the executive committee of his Detroit law firm, Clark, Klein & Beaumont. Larry joined the firm in 1961 after graduating from the University of Michigan Law School. This firm has approximately 100 lawyers. Larry's job is to please each of them.

Dave Payne is the new chairman of the McLean Fund of simsbury, Conn. This charitable fund oversees the McLean home, village, and game refuge. Dave is CFO and EVP of the Bank of New England and a director of Hartford Hospital, the Institute of Living, and the Hartford Graduate Center.

The Wall Street Journal in late 1989 reported that, led by "three influential Wall Street investment banks, consideration was being given to dropping the long-standing fight to keep banks out of the securities business." Bob Downey, a partner at Goldman Sachs, became chairman of the Securities Industry Association, "the main trade group for the nation's brokerage firms." Working with the White House, Treasury, members of Congress, and the Federal Reserve, are all part of Bob's new assignment. For those of you who know about this subject, reform of the Glass-Steagall Act is being advocated from several points of view.

Purely by accident, much of this column is about service. We were told at Dartmouth, and perhaps understand better now, that there is more joy, excitement, and fulfillment in doing something for others than in getting for ourselves.
