Time flies. Woodstock was 20 years ago this summer, and I'm patiently waiting for the postcards of classmates who made the pilgrimage. Most of us had our 20th high school reunions last summer and are wondering about the next sign of our advancing maturity. As I contemplated the flood of instructions for my three-year-old daughter's first fall "school" term, the mailman brought an even more ominous reminder. In what could be a first for our class, Alike Meehan recently retired from the Rochester investment management firm of Manning & Napier. Mike was hired for the job of sales representative by Bill Manning '5B back in 1978, and later became a chartered financial analyst with the firm. Mike and Cathy and children (Matt, 6; Patrick, 4; and Lauren, 3) have relocated to Vail, Colo., where Mike intends to ski daily and truly retire!
Mike also reports that Kip Hale was recently hired as his replacement. Kip, if you are as successful as Mike was, you can retire in 11 years and still beat most of the class. And finally, Dave Bailey, if you really did retire from the Big Apple to pursue leisuretime activities, you could have been first, had you written.
As soon as I had written the above paragraph, I was reminded that our class president, Peter Broberg, retired from professional baseball several years ago. Pete was here in Dallas for a Texas Rangers Oldtimers game again this summer, but was limited to one-third of an inning against the Astro Oldtimers. I guess they didn't want Pete to take too much advantage of some of the more senior oldtimers. Anyway, I don't think Pete's retirement counts, as he is vigorously pursuing his law career in his hometown of Palm Beach, Fla.
To paraphrase Andy Warhol, perhaps our society is compressing time so much that we'll each be young for five minutes. This is depressing; next month, I think we should go back to baby announcements, and notes about the upcoming Trustee election. Please write . . .
