Our Club hosted two Tokyo University students at our March dinner at Suehiro's Restaurant in Tokyo. Kazuo Ogura and Mariko Suda, representatives of the Society of International Cultural Exchange of Tokyo University, are .proposing to establish a cultural relationship with Dartmouth. If approved at Tokyo University and Dartmouth, our Club feels that a long and fruitful relationship with individuals of the caliber of Mr. Ogura and Miss Suda will be highly beneficial to the College.
Once again, the party was christened with Hartley Caldwell's '23 incomparable punch, which is becoming a "must" in our get togethers. Although not comparable to Sake or Asahi Beer, or anything else of an indigenous nature, the Hartley Punch was antecedent to an evening of sukiyaki, geisha entertainment and a film on an American's introduction to Japanese culture. Dave Hitchcock '50 somehow managed to put away his Konji Cards and hobble into the festivities on crutches, aided by his "okusan" Lee. Dave broke his ankle skiing in the Japanese Alps. Bill Breer '57 impressed us all, including we think his date, Peggy French, by chatting in Japanese with the kimonoed waitress. Chick Onodera '57 was helpful when the going got grammatically hazardous.
Delight and Dave Tillotson '50 brought Ruth and Bill Lott, New Hampshirites. as guests. Delight had a little difficulty handling the raw eggs which are an integral part of the sukiyaki. Once again, the medical profession was well represented: Mary and Dr. John Harmon '38, Grace and Dr. George Van Petten '43, and Sarah and Dr. Ben Gilson '54. All were most helpful in Hartley's laboratory pre-testing of the punch. Gwen and Irv Clark '56 supervised the post-testing process as Ray Dickinson '38 offered "kam peis" (skoals, saluds).
Yoji Hiroto '28s, once a student at Tokyo University, gave his wholehearted endorsement to the proposed cultural exchange as an additional link in Japanese-American relations. With much sorrow, we said "sayonara" to Marsha and Monk Bancroft '57 who are returning to the Land of Little Sake. Sayonaras were said to Barbara and SteveHibbs '57 in February.
On March 19, final interviews were completed for Japanese high schoolers. Interview chairman Irv had Nobu Mitsui '43, Breer-san, Kunio Katakura '57s and myself as committee members. We hope for greater future strength in "Vox Clamantis in Tokyo."
