Our headliner this month in the category of Smiles, Styles, and Profiles is JohnStreet, who served time with me on the third floor of Streeter Hall freshman year. John has lifted himself up from the treacherous bathroom, battered phone booth, and curious hall odors to launch an interesting, off-the-beaten-path business career. He worked through the end of last year for APM, a health-care consulting firm in New York, before setting out on his own. The result to date is Silicon Sense, Inc., a silicon wafer brokerage that John founded with two partners in Nashua, N.H.

So what does a silicon wafer broker do, you ask? Well, John and his partners buy the wafers from major manufacturers and resell them to various high-tech companies in need of, yes, wafers. These companies in turn use them to produce computer chips, diodes, transistors, and those dry, chalky candy discs that you used to get on Halloween but never ate. John's customers hail from all over the U.S., Canada, China, India, and Europe. What's more, Silicon Sense, Inc. has opened another office in Redondo Beach, Calif., (from the Latin redcnd, to gawk), where John chooses to reside. As a result, he swims at lunch, plays volleyball after work, and has far too much Day-Glo in his wardrobe.

From wafers to weddings, Eric Peterson was married to Krista Montesano in Buffalo this August. In keeping with tradition, the group of onlookers included numerous wearers of the Green, such as Mary Marlette, Scott Rusert, Brian Brady, JohnJakiemiec, Tom Funk, Jack Maloney,Dave Wiser, Darr and Leslie Keiger, and Ken Beck. Eric and Krista enjoyed a honeymoon in Barbados and even got to visit with the vacationing Eric Tate (not to be confused with the working Eric Tate). The Petersons have returned to Chicago where Eric is enrolled at Northwestern Law School.

Here's a final story from our armed forces. James Killmond graduated from the U.S. Army Ranger School in the spring, and he took time out to be married before beginning a stint (or whatever the army calls it) at Fort Bragg, N.C. Second Lieutenant Killmond is an infantry platoon leader in the 82nd Airborne Division. I think that means he can make the grunts give him 200 push-ups or scrub the latrine with a 0tooth- brush. Be all that you can be ...
