I'm about to broaden my horizon and travel to Fort McClellan, Ala., where I am going to represent a sergeant in a general courtmartial. Fate is not with us since he'll be tried by a jury of military police. I'm certain they will be fair and impartial.
Chip Gow reports that he has moved from BAII, Asia, to become managing director of another merchant bank in Hong Kong. This marks the twelfth year in Asia for Chip, his wife, Annie, and daughters Caroline 3 1/2, and Elizabeth 2. Chip writes that he occasionally sees Mike Former and his family in Bangkok. Mike is studying and teaching comparative religion. He will re turn to the U.S. in 1989 to obtain his Ph.D.
Thurlow Evans Tibbs, the director of the Evans-Tibbs Collection, is presenting an exhibition at the Hood Museum at Dartmouth in conjunction with the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service. The show consists of drawings, paintings, and watercolors by black American artists from the 1880s to the present.
We have our own curator here in Atlanta. Maxwell L. Anderson '77 is the director of the Emory University Museum of Art & Archeology. I recently saw Max on an airplane with a satchel of relics on its way to a home in the museum. I also had dinner with a '76, Mary Ellen Donovan, who is my good friend ana alter ego. Mary Ellen lives in New York City. Her second book, LoveBlocks, will be published this fall. Mel is becoming well known in New York for her recent article, "The Yale Chin."
We have a number of classmates involved in altruistic endeavors. Jonathan Hodgdon is presently in Bangladesh and working for CARE. During the recent monsoon flooding, Jonathan participated in emergency delivery of supplies and other flood relief work. Post-flood recovery efforts will be focused on the distribution of material for new housing construction, seeds for spring planting, and farm tools.
Bob Grondine, also in Asia, is looking forward to our 15th Reunion, June 16—18. Bob, in his third year of partnership in the international law firm of Baker & Mc- Kenzie, just spent a week in Oahu and had dinner with Kevin Chee and Pat Lau. Kevin and his wife, Melinda, just had their third child. Kevin enjoys running his own law practice and specializes in insurance defense and general commercial litigation. Fat Lau is also an attorney and specializes in real estate and general commercial matters.
Jim Gardner has taken a teaching fellowship in emergency medicine at Stanford in Palo Alto, and shares an apartment with Kirt Pruyn, who works in the student housing administration at Stanford.
Congratulations to Meg Winthrop, who is bethrothed to Captain Rick Cabeza of Sylvena, Bolivia. Meg, a hostage of the Bolivian Revolution for nearly six months, was rescued by Rick, head of the underground police in Sylvena. The wedding is planned tor June.
My thanks and appreciation to RickRanger and his wife, Cathy, who are always ready to come to my aid. Rick is a prolific writer who celebrates the visual nuances of life. In addition to his many activities Rick is teaching oil and gas contracts to the Petroleum Land Program students at Cal State. Cathy will join the board of an interfaith homeless shelter. I look forward to seeing Rick and Cathy and our other classofficers, at Class Officers Weekend, April 28-29.
