The big news is that plans for the fall mini have been completed by Jack Manchester and it promises to be the best ever, October 5-7. This is not an Ivy League weekend, actually it's Holy Cross, chosen for two reasons. It's the height of the fall colors, and by avoiding a more popular time we have good accommodations, including rooms at the Inn, use of its Wheelock Room for dinner Friday, the Outing Club Saturday for a banquet with a speaker from the College, and on Sunday, NatLeonard has invited us to his hilltop farm in Norwich with fall color views of the Vermont hills and the Connecticut valley. Plan to come a day early or stay a day late to visit your old dorm or fraternity, sit in on an undergraduate class, talk with some students, and see some events at the Hood or the Hop.

A detailed schedule of '33 and College events will be sent later. So mark off your calendar now, call a friend, and enjoy the magnificent mini.

You may have seen Gil-Fernandez and spouse Jo on Public Television's program "Conserving America" recently. For 25 seasons they have been reintroducing ospreys to nesting sites on the marshes near their home in Dartmouth, Mass. Where formerly only seven pairs of these great fishing raptors survived the devastation of DDT, now 75 pairs occupy the "Osprey Orchard" of nest-pole platforms erected by Gil and Jo in the southeastern Massachusetts coastal estuaries.

Two famous classmates, Dick Goldthwait and Paul Zamecnik, continue to gain more honors. The former was awarded the Mather Medal at Ohio State for his contributions to geology, and the latter received a $300,000 grant to continue his biochemical research on AIDS at the Worcester Institute.

The class can be proud of its many retired members deeply involved in civic and charitable affairs. Take Bob Guggenheim, for example. He's on a half-dozen boards including hospitals, the M.S. society, and a college. For 28 years he's been a leader in the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County, Calif., and has recently raised $200,000 for it. In his spare time he collects netsuke, small Japanese carvings of which he has a major collection.
