The doctor of science degree, one of the five honorary degrees conferred at the Dartmouth Commencement exercises on June 11, was given to Charles Everett Koop, surgeon general of the Public Health Service. As reported in Dartmouth Currents, Dr. Koop received a standing ovation in recognition of his accomplishments as the "outspoken, courageous surgeon general of the United States." All of us in '37 join in congratulating Chick Koop for his great service to his country and its citizens which caused reflected glory to shine on his alma mater and his class at Dartmouth.
Additional good news is the announcement by President Fran Fenn that RussStearns will be the chairman of our 55 th Reunion in June of 1992. Fran was discussing the subject with Russ, when Russ was able to read Fran's lips and volunteered to be chairman. Thanks, Russ, from all of us. You were great as chairman of the 50th and we look forward to another great one.
Carolyn and I visited with Lem and Elizabeth Bowen in Hanover on July 5 and found Lem on the road to recovery from a June 9 operation which resulted in his having a defibrillator installed to control his heart fibulation. They are hopeful that they will be able to make the Danube trip.
Fran told me with great pride that the Alumni Fund set a new record of $12.3 million and our class raised $ 110,000 and still counting. Head agent Dana Prescott and his agents achieved 97 percent of our participation goal. A big cheer for Dana and his agents.
Ruth Ray, who moved to 53 Gingerbread Lane, Yarmouthport, MA 02675 in July, has agreed to serve as co-chairwoman of the class bequest and trust program and will work along with Chuck Bassett and RobRobin.
Lynn Marie Tracy 'B6, our class scholar for four years, was married to Gregory Nerland '86 at Aquinas House chapel in Hanover on August 5. Many of you met Lynn at the mini-reunions from 1983—85.
Last issue we added the name of the eighth kin of 1937 now attending Dartmouth. While walking by the Psi U house I engaged in conversation a brother washing his car. When I told him I was '37 he said, "Did you know my grandfather, CarltonNichols of '37?" I replied that I did. He is Jeff Kirwood '91, a member of the ski team and the ninth class relative presently at Dartmouth.
