Phil Swain, a member of the Washington State Board of Education, has been named as president of the National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE). In his remarks to NASBE members he said, "NASBE represents enormous pent-up influence; we have great potential to bring about constructive change in American education. We must no longer allow others to exert power to that end, while we sit on the sidelines." It appears, Phil, you will be commuting from Seattle to Washington for 1990. Hope you and Phyllis will be able to detour through Hanover for our mini-reunion on September 14—15.

Jack also sent along an obit clipping from the Richmond Times Dispatch telling of the death of Bill Hoyt on January 4, 1990.

We are thankful for many Christmas greetings from classmates with news we pass on to you. Lis and Bob McCoy forsook the subzero weather of Hanover for a Christmas visit with children in San Francisco. Bill Falion sent along a great picture of 12 Falions at a family reunion in June.

Martha and Bob Bosworth hope to spend a month in Eastman in the fall. We missed you, Martha, in the '37 Open last September. Esther and Fred Mayo hope to make another trip to Hanover before they get to the point where they can't enjoy it. Do it in 1990, Fred. Carl and Taffy Noyes spent three weeks in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, last February and purchased a small villa in partnership with two other couples. It is available for rent a good part of the time in case any of you are interested.

From Bill and Patty Rotch's Christmas letter, Bill says, "Our government must stop trying to mold Central America into a Washington-conceived image of democracy. Some of those millions of dollars could be better spent in improving the economies of El Salvador and Nicaragua. Above all we wish people high in government would talk to one another."

Class trips chairman Ben Doran is planning a 1990 class trip in September on the Seine River, with visits to London and Paris. Ben and Marge are spending several months in their new condo at Marathon, Fla. Bibs and Katie write that the Seine trip sounds less strenuous than the Danube and they are thinking about it. Mort and Marj are also thinking Seine.
