Spirits were high as the Dartmouth band passed our mini-reunion tailgate party at East Wheelock and Park Streets. The skies had cleared, and we had much to cheer about as Dartmouth opened die defense of the Ivy League crown with a decisive victory over Penn.

Our new class president, Russ Stearns, guided us through the morning class meeting with an even and firm hand on the tiller. His skillful chairmanship of the 55 th Reunion resulted in a $3,000 profit which will be used to insure the Memorial Book program.

The piece de resistance of the meeting was the report by head agent Fran Fenn that FloMoore had made a magnificent gift to the Will to Excel campaign of two million dollars to fund a complete renovation and modernization of the Center Theater of Hopkins Center. The theater will be named the Lansing Porter Moore Theater. Flo was present, and we had the opportunity to thank her for this generous gift honoring our loyal and faithful classmate.

Friday evening at our dinner at the DOC House Dean of Admissions Karl M. Furstenberg, described the admissions process and answered questions. Notes from his talk: 1,080 freshmen in the class of 1996; no candidates taken from the waiting list; 55 percent male and 45 percent female; 24 percent with minority background, which is the lowest in the Ivy League; 807 different secondary schools represented; 42 percent receiving scholarship assistance ($5.6 million). Students with interesting backgrounds include an Idaho home student and a registered barber.

Hart and Peggy Beardsley traveled to Belgium to visit their grandson and great-grandson. Jud Smith has been shooting his age at the Hanover Country Club. Who can top or equal this feat?

Bill Rotch, writing an editorial on TomMclntyre, concluded with this tribute: "Tom Mclntyre is gone now; I wish he could have heard the things people have been saying about him. The lesson for the rest of us is to be less quick to criticize those with whom we disagree, to recognize their strengths and their virtues, and to say so now rather than in lengthy obituaries when they are gone."
