Word has reached me about our classmate Robert (Rocket) G. Reed III, who currently is president and CEO of Pacific Resources, Inc., an international energy company headquartered in Hawaii, with interests in oil refining, trading, marketing, distribution, retail gasoline operations, and utility gas and propane distribution. While this in itself seems quite an achievement, he has just been awarded the Freedoms Foundation's George Washington Honor Medal for programs and activities he led as chairman of the Hawaii Business Roundtable's education efforts on behalf of Hawaii's public school system.
Since returning from our 40th Reunion, I have worn the reunion jacket (and a green D hat) and this has produced a series of conversations with both known and unknown alumni. It was one of these occurrences that put me face to face with BobSmith, who continues to work for New England Power and is in his 40th year with this firm. Bob now makes his official residence North Conway, where he can enjoy his love of skiing, and uses a condo in Westboro Mass., as the residence to be close to the work week.
Dick Mallary has been elected chairman of the board of Howard Bank. Since 1985 he has been CEO of Vermont Electric Power and previous to this was executive VP of Central Vermont Public Service Corp. From 1977 to 1980 Dick was secretary of administration under Vermont Gov. Richard Snelling, and from 1972 to 1975 Dick was a U.S. Representative. Prior to his election as chairman Dick had been on the board of this bank, which is a subsidiary of the Banknorth Group, Inc. a $1.6 billion bank holding company.
It is exciting to a class secretary to get unsolicited letters and updates on our classmates. It has begun and it is my hope this is just the beginning of many more to come. Heard from Bill Knight Jr. who after graduation earned a law degree from Northwestern University School of Law in 1952. Then he joined the family law firm of Knight & Knight, which had been founded by his grandfather. Here he practiced probate, insurance law trial, and appellate court work until his retirement on July 1, 1989. He has maintained association and interest in the College with a sister (and retired husband) who five in Etna, and his cousin, C. Bayard Johnson '53, whose two daughters graduated from Dartmouth. Bill married Becky Hodge in 1969 and they and son Merritt spend the month of January each year in Hawaii. He hopes Merritt may decide to attend Dartmouth but it now appears the choice is between his alma mater and the University of Hawaii.
A letter from Ted Krug finds him well and still working, active in golf with the U.S. Seniors, and sailing his ketch out of Westbrook, Conn. He went to Iceland in July to fish for salmon and reports this sure is a challenge with a fly rod. In his travels he has met up with Bobb Slattery in Myrtle Beach, Mark Landsburgh in New Mexico, and Dod Mott in Indiana. He and his wife, Shirley, spend time in the winter at their place at Mountain Lake, Lake Wales, Fla.
