Two of our classmates have been honored recently for their outstanding contributions to their professions and communities. Peter M. Fishbein was awarded the Brandeis Distinguished Community Service Award on April 2, 1990, by Brandeis University. Peter was cited as "one of the nation's most prominent and respected trial attorneys, a legal scholar, and a dedicated civic and communal leader." He is chairman of the executive committee of Kaye, Scholer, Fierman, Hays & Handler, a global law firm. After Dartmouth, Peter graduated from Harvard Law School and served as a law clerk to Associate Justice William J. Brennan Jr. of the U.S. Supreme Court. Later he served as deputy secretary general of the International Peace Corps and worked on Robert Kennedy's U.S. Senate campaign. He became a partner of Kaye, Scholer in 1967. Peter is also a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and the American Bar Foundation. He has served as a trustee of Goddard College, the Citizens Budget Commission, UJA-Federation of N.Y., and the Westchester County Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith.
Our second distinguished classmate is Dr. Allen W. Root. Allen is a pediatric endocrinologist, a charter faculty member of the University of South Florida and a professor since 1973, associate chairman of the Department of Pediatrics, and director of the Division of Pediatric Endocrinology. He was recently elected to the American Board of Pediatrics, and chairman of the Endocrinology Sub-board which is involved in certification for the specialty. Allen is internationally recognized for his research in abnormalities of growth and sexual maturation and has published more than 170 scientific articles including two books. Allen and his wife, Janet, live in Tampa and have three children: Jonathan, Jennifer, and Michael, all of whom have chosen to become physicians. Congratulations to both of you for these well deserved honors.
Several 1955 class officers attended the annual Class Officers Weekend in Hanover at the end of April. Included were President Bob Fanger, Treasurer Ralph Sauter, Head Agent Brooks Parker (and Gail), and yours truly. In addition, we were joined at lunch by classmate Skip Hance, whose duties at the College include alumni affairs. During the meetings, our class treasurer was elected as the Class Treasurer's Association representative to the Alumni Council, a well deserved honor.
Speaking of Ralph, he asked that I remind you that a number of us have not sent in our class dues for the current year. Dues are $35 plus an optional class scholarship fund contribution of $25 and should be sent to Ralph at 451 Dover Road, Westwood, MA 02090.
Also attending the weekend meeting was Lucy Cogswell, who is the mother of JackCogswell and treasurer of the class of 1931. From her I learned that Jack has joined an increasing number of us and retired from the New England Telephone Company where he has been secretary and treasurer.
