From the far west, Charlie Huntley sent word that he and Josephine received a beautifully framed plaque last spring from the town fathers of Austin, Texas, in appreciation of the work that they did in establishing an organic garden club. They started this in 1945 with only a few members and it has now grown to over 180 families.
And from nearby in Tyler, Texas, KroggieKrogstad writes that he and Gertrude are feeling okay although not as spry as they used to be. Their motto as to housework is "Don't do anything today that you can put off until tomorrow," and his advice relative to exercising comes from Chief Justice (Oliver Wendell) Holmes who said that he gets his exercise burying his friends who exercised.
Merritt Joslyn reports from Rancho Mirage, Calif., after receiving his latest class birthday card (with its gold star for achievement in making it to 85): "Glad to have accomplished another milestone. In these so-called golden years, it is difficult to avoid some signs of wear and tear such as poor eyesight and hearing."
From Apalachin, N.Y., Jack Shaw wrote, "The best way for me to answer your inquiry about my health is for me to report that "I'm up! I have a wheel chair parking permit and I have five great-grandchildren. My hobby is making blocks and a wagon for each of them."
John Rintels received his 85th anniversary gold star on Martha's Vineyard where he has a summer cottage. He and Dorothy still like to travel, and they have had to give up golf but still scrounge around in the mud on the seashore for a mess of clams for supper. They are looking forward to attending the 65thin 1992.
